QUESTION 1 [25 Marks]

Figure 1 shows an inclined conveyor which is used in the underground mining plant to transport
the ore for the next process. The height between the bottom to the top of the conveyor, h is 3
meters. The conveyor is to travel at a speed of 0.5 ms-1 with the rotational speed NL of 20 rpm. An
induction motor is used to drive the conveyor. The speed of the motor is NM. This motor is
connected to the lower end of the conveyor through a reduction gear with gear ratio of 0.03, an
efficiency of 7X% and a gear moment of inertia (on the motor side) equal to 0.6X kgm2. The total
mass of the conveyor system (including the belt and the drum) is 500 kg.
(X is the last digit of your student ID number).

Figure 1: Inclined Conveyor Belt

The motor must overcome the forces acting on the inclined conveyor which is given by:
𝐹 = 𝜇𝑀𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑔 + 𝑀𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑔𝑠𝑖𝑛𝜃

where 𝜇 is the coefficient of friction acting on the conveyor, 𝑀𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 is the mass of load transported
and the mass of the conveyor system, g is the gravitational acceleration, and 𝜃 is the conveyor’s
inclination angle. It is known that the conveyors’ inclination is at an angle of 20o with a 𝜇 value of
0.3. During operation, the conveyor can convey a maximum of 1000 kg and a minimum 200 kg of
ore.

EPPB3023, Semester 2, 2021/2022

The motor chosen to drive the conveyor must have a minimum of 10% additional output power
capacity to handle abnormal situations.

Motor B 950 rpm 7.0 kW 0.90 kgm2
Motor C 1150 rpm 6.0 kW 0.90 kgm2

(a) Based on the information stated above, select a motor from Table 1 to be used to drive the
conveyor system. Show all calculations. [Answer: refer below] [13 Marks]
(b) Using the motor selected in part (a), determine if the rated torque of the motor is sufficient
to start the conveyor system from rest to full speed within 30 seconds in the morning before
the material feeding process starts. [Answer: refer below] [7 marks]
(c) With the aid of the torque-speed characteristic, explain the condition for the stable
equilibrium point. [Answer: refer notes] [5 marks]

Answers Q1(a) & (b) : Motor speed = 666.67 rpm

QUESTION 2 [25 Marks]

Figure 2: DC Rectifier Drive

You are working as an engineer at Bidara Flour Mill Sdn Bhd. The plant recently purchased a
wheat flour mill which is driven by a 6.5 kW, 280 V, 40 A and 1000 rpm separately excited
DC motor with armature resistance of 0.5 Ω a back-emf constant kB of 2.85 V/rads-1 and rated
field voltage of 150 V. The armature winding of the DC motor is controlled by a circulating
current controlled rectifier supplied from a 400 V three-phase AC supply as shown in
Figure 2. The field winding of the DC motor is controlled by a controlled rectifier supplied
from a 250 V single-phase AC source. The torque governing the behaviour of the flour mill as
a function of the motor speed 𝜔 (in rads-1) is given by the equation:

𝑇𝐿 = 0.008𝜔2
(a) The flour mill is operating with a speed of 750 rpm in motoring operation. Determine
the firing angles for both converters under this condition.
[Answer: 𝜶𝒂 = 𝟔𝟒. 𝟓𝟏° , 𝜶𝒃 = 𝟏𝟏𝟓. 𝟒𝟗°, 𝜶𝒇 = 𝟒𝟖. 𝟐𝟏°] [10 marks]
(b) The flour mill is now operating with the speed of 1020 rpm. At some instance, it goes
into regenerative braking operation. The inertia is assumed to be large and thus the
speed changes very slowly. Calculate the new firing angles of the controlled rectifiers
[Answer: 𝜶𝒂 = 𝟓𝟖. 𝟕𝟖° , 𝜶𝒃 = 𝟏𝟐𝟏. 𝟐𝟐°, 𝜶𝒇 = 𝟒𝟗. 𝟓𝟒°] [11 marks]
(c) Briefly explain the concept of four-quadrant operation in a DC motor drive in terms of
power, torque and speed. [Answer: refer notes] [4 marks]
