Butterfly valves Advantage
Butterfly valves are used as isolating and - Low pressure losses with valve completely open
regulating devices on aqueducts, water- - Drop tight closure
works, hydroelectric plants and nuclear - Reduced overall dimensions
plants. - Simple construction and intrinsically reliable
- Manually and electrically operated
- Possibility to be used as a safety valve (positive
safety valve able to close even in case of tampering)
In addition to the above mentioned technical advantages
5 there is a remarkable economical benefit as this valve
is cheaper than other valves with same materials and
working conditions. Di Nicola Infinam srl engines and
manufacturing butterfly valves according to the most
12 important international standards (BS 5155, DIN 3554
13 part 1-2, ANSI / AWWA C504-87 and EN 593 DESIGN)

Anticorrosive protection

As standards from ND 150 up to ND 1800 mm. in ductile iron the anticorrosive protection is produced
on hot support by epoxy resins with 150 micron minimum thickness. Epoxy power is suitable for por-
table water according to specifications of most important European Certification agencies. As standard
from ND 250 up to ND 4000 mm. made in S275J steal for industrial purposes, the anticorrosive protec-
tion is produced by means of a zinc flame-wire coating of 70-100 micron thickness after sandblasting
grade SA 2 ½ and epoxy bicomponent spray with 100 micron minimum thickness. Every single part of
the butterfly valve is coated before assembling. The mechanical touching surfaces are coated with a
bicomponent epoxy paint.

- Even coating;

- High mechanical coat resistance;

- No porosity with consistent height;

- High resistance to water corrosive agents;

- High resistance to soil corrosive agents in case of underground installation;

- Highest adhesion;

- No maintenance even after years of working;

Our firm reserves the right to make any technical changes without any notice to the client.
Hydraulic test

All the Di Nicola butterfly valves are hydraulically tested to verify the conformity to ISO 5208 or
EN 12266-1.

Marking
Di Nicola butterfly valves are marked as follows:
- Nominal Diameter ND in mm;
- Nominal Pressure NP in bar;
- Material according to UNI-ISO 1083-91;
- Manufacturer’s trade mark;

DOUBLE AND TRIPLE ECCENTRICITY BUTTERFLY VALVE
Double eccentricity
The valve disk is carried by two stub shafts mounted in an eccentricity:

Primary eccentricity advantages:

- Better fastening of shafts to disk; Double eccentricity
- Seal made of a single piece;
- Seal replaceable without removing the disk;
- Reduced seal dragging on sealing seat;

Secondary eccentricity advantages:

- Better detaching of sealing from seat;
- Lower closing torque;

Triple eccentricity
The valve disk is carried by two stub shafts mounted in an eccentric position from the centerline of the disk
An additional eccentricity is obtained by means of a particular machining of the body seat.

Primary eccentricity advantages:

- Better fastening of shafts to disk; Triple eccentricity
- Seal made of a single piece;
- Seal replaceable without removing the disk;
- Reduced seal dragging on sealing seat;

Secondary eccentricity advantages:

- Better detaching of sealing from seat;
- Lower closing torque;

Third eccentricity advantages:

- Sediments removing during closing operations
(for big size valves)
- Lower opening torque at higher pressure

Kv = Q = water flow in m3/h
√ΔP Kv = flow factor for the valve m3/h (diagram 1)

The flow factor - Kv- is defined as the flow of water through a valve at 20 C° in cubic meters per hour
(m3 / h) with a pressure drop of 1 bar. It depends on the valve’s design, diameter and opening angle
of the disc.

Safety butterfly valves with lever and counterweight

Safety butterfly valves are used for the fol- Constructive characteristics
lowing purposes:
Safety butterfly valves are made of:
- Shut off the pipeline on pumping plans or pen-
stocks in case of failure of electric power in order - A standard butterfly valve actuated by a weight
to avoid backflow towards the pump; loaded hydraulic cylinder maintaining the main
valve in open position; a counterweight con-
- Keep low the damages that may be caused by nected to the hydraulic cylinder by a steel pin,
water excess velocity into pipelines by supplying sized to allow an automatic closing under the
a hydroelectric turbine in case of malfunction- heaviest flow condition. The actuator is mount-
ing of the turbine, or more frequently, following ed on the body of the valve through steel plates
a pipe fracture due to earthquakes or crumbling and the cylinder of the actuator turns on low
movements. friction bronze trunnion.
- An hydraulic power pack with electric or ma-
nual pump, provided with valves and pres-
sure switches to control closing and opening.
- Mechanical or magnetic ultrasonic over velo-
city sensors mounted on the pipeline.

Mechanical or magnetic / ultrasonic over velocity sensor.

This requires constant and reliable power supply. The detector may be a flow meter with an adjustable
alarm threshold. When the threshold is reached through an electric impulse, an oleodynamic valve on the
hydraulic power pack is trigged and the valve closes. Di Nicola butterfly safety valves can be supplied with
many accessories as supplementary safety mechanism to avoid openings at higher differential pressures
than the ones needed on project and oleodynamic power packs for the release and resetting of the valve
even when electrical power is missing.

Hydraulic / mechanical over velocity sensor

The mechanical over velocity sensor is made of stub pipe to be welded to the pipeline, upstream from
the valve, containing the tripping paddle made of stainless steel. On one end of this paddle an adjust-
able counterweight allows regulation of the intervention rate. On the upper side of the sub pipe a hum-
mer device with mechanical locker operates the oleodynamic valve of the hydraulic circuit.
