Question 2

2.“Well, a man had to have a wife, so why not have one with a reasonable dowry?”
Why do you think Thirulchelvam had such a thought? In your opinion, is it important for
your life partner to be financially stable?

Dowry refers to the money, commodities or property that a woman should brings
to her husband or her family in the marriage. Dowry is most commonly found in Indian
patrilineal cultures. They expected brides to live with or near with their husband’s family.
I think that Thiruchelvam had such a thought because he thinks is right to
demand for dowry from his future in-laws even though he is a doctor by profession
because it is an ancient custom that has been practiced from the past. He also thinks that
dowry is necessary for a marriage. He also thinks that dowry can provide certain financial
security and it is considered that it can eventually provide a living for their future children.
Thus, he is also believing that if a man had to have a wife, then have one with a reasonable
dowry. He also thinks that dowry is the most important element in a marriage.
In my opinion, dowry is important for our life partner but dowry cannot relieve
our life partner from his financial probems. We have believed that dowry can solve the
urgent financial problems but only a short term solution. A dowry that given to the groom
is different from every bride and her family. Entirely dependent on the dowry to relieve
from the financial problems is not a wise choice. A dowry can also be used up if planned it
wisely. The dowry usually consisted of money, land or property, jewellery and more
others. A life partner especially man not get expected value due to the devaluation when
selling the land and property.
In conclusion, the dowry is not a necessary in a marriage. A dowry just an
ancient custom and it doesn’t need much consideration.
