POTENTIALLY USEFUL STRATEGIES for nausea and vomiting (palliative)

• Provide liquids frequently.

• Provide a quiet, relaxing, pleasant atmosphere

• Provide companionship for meals for the patient.

Teach the patient relaxation techniques.

Encourage the patient to get enough rest.

• Have the patient take medications after meals if possible, except for antiemetic therapy.

• Have the patient try an alcoholic beverage before meals if desired.

• Wine based aperitifs are often better tolerated than whiskey.

• Keep the patient's mouth clean and moist. Foul taste in the mouth may make symptoms
worse.

Remove foul odors.

• Administer a topical antifungal (e.g., nystatin)

if patient has thrush.

• Use hydration (water bottle) in an oxygen line.

Institute etiology-specific therapy for nausea and vomiting.
