Testing of Sieve Analysis on Coarse Aggregates (SNI ASTM C136: 2012)

1. Purpose and objectives

a. Meaning
This method is intended as a guide in the examination to determine
the division of grains (gradations) of aggregates using a sieve.

b. Purpose
The purpose of this test is to obtain the distribution of the amount
or percentage of aggregate grains. The distribution obtained can be
shown in a table or graph.

2. Basic theory
a. Coarse aggregate for concrete can be gravel as a result of natural
disintegration from rocks or in the form of broken stones obtained
from rock breaking.
b. Generally called coarse aggregate with a size of more than 4.75 mm and
less than 40 mm.
c. Coarse aggregate must consist of hard or non-porous grains. Coarse
aggregate grains are eternal, in the sense that they are not affected
bythe weather such as sun or rain.
d. Aggregate consists of granules of various sizes and if sifted with the
specified size arrangement must meet the following requirements:
1) The remainder above the 31.5 mm Sieve must be 0% by weight.
2) The remainder above the 4 mm Sieve must range between 90-98% by weight.
3) The difference between the cumulative remnants on two
consecutive Sieves is a maximum of 60% and a minimum of 10%
by weight.

3. Materials needed :
Coarse aggregate of 2500 grams of oven dry
4. Tools used
a. Scales with accuracy 0.1 gram
b. Mechanical sieve machine (shaker)
c. Brass
d. Oven with a max temperature of 150oC made in Germany
e. A set of Sieves; 9.5 mm (3/8 mm): No.4 (4.75 mm); No.8 (2.36 mm);
No.16 (1.18 mm); No. 30 (0,600 mm); No.50 (0,300 mm); No.100
(0.150 mm); No.200 (0.075 mm); Brass

5. Procedure
a. Provides 2500 grams of coarse aggregate.
b. Arrange the Sieves according to the order (biggest diameter above).
c. Insert coarse aggregate into the Sieve and vibrate the Sieve for 15
minutes.
d. Weigh each Sieve.
e. Record the results of weighing each Sieve.
