2. Can you identify which flags belong to ASEAN countries?
ASEAN COUNTRY FLAG

ANALYSIS
1.What do you know about ASEAN?
 Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) refers to a political organization that
aims to develop economy, establish relationships between countries and adapt cultural
diversity. This organization also promote peace and stability among the ASEAN nations.
There are 10 members of this organization: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia,
Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

2. Do you have any idea why ASEAN was created?

 In my prior knowledge about ASEAN, the purpose of organizing this group was to promote
peace, stability and security by abiding in the rule of law respect for justice and in the
relationship among member countries of ASEAN. Through establishing this organization,
development in the economy, society and culture of these countries will be attained

3. Where and how did you learn about ASEAN??

 Back in my high school days, it was the first time that I heard about ASEAN and in the 1 st
semester In my 3rd year college, we have a subject about ASEAN and that was the reason
why I have prior knowledge about it.

APPLICATION
1. What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages of the creation of the ASEAN?
 In my understanding, the advantages if the creation of ASEAN are as follows:
 Economic growth, social progress and cultural development.
 Strengthening national relationships
 Peace, safety and stability.
 Access to job opportunities
 Development in agriculture and industries, trading capacity of countries, advancement in
transportation and communication.
 Unity amidst diversity.
 In contrast, I think that the disadvantage of organizing ASEAN is diversity. Each country
that are member of this organization has its own values, beliefs, culture and language. This
difference can cause misunderstandings between people in each country that may lead to
national conflict. Another risk of this organization is the access to information and security
of each country in the organization and If conflict is born within the organization, this can
information can be exploit and can become their weakness.
2. In what ways do you think the formation of ASEAN has helped our country and its people?
 In my understanding, ASEAN has helped the Philippines and its people in various ways. The
development in economy and society as well as sharing our culture with other countries has
lead to improvement in of the nation and the lives of the Filipino people. Through this
organization, sharing of knowledge about agriculture and economic growth strategies are
made possible which made our country progress as time pass. Security and stability are also
part of this development and the reason why we experience peace among ASEAN nations
because of the mutual understanding that we share and by abiding in the rule of law respect
for justice which plays a critical role in achieving peacefulness in ASEAN countries.

he is good at twisting words and making
people believe him.
King Jessada plays a large supporting
role, alternately praising or punishing Sri

Srinuan and Saiyud, SriThanonchai's
two wives, both won by trickery

Beginning
Sri Thanonchai's mother-to-be one night dreams that she brings the moon back to her
house. She tells her husband about her dream, and her husband tells the Brahman about
the dream. The Brahman says that they will have a bright child. Later the wife gives
birth to Sri Thanonchai. He is the only child in the family, but later his mother bears
another son. His brother receives a lot of attention from his family, and Sri Thanonchai
becomes jealous. Sri Thanonchai's mother asks him to wash his brother. Sri Thanonchai
proceeds to "clean" his brother as one cleans meat by butchering him, cleaning him
Middle
inside and out. When his parents return home and find their son dead, they banish Sri
Thanonchai to live in the Temple.
Middle
One day the Monk sees that the Roof of the temple is old and it is falling down so he asks the
temple boys to fix the roof. Sri Thanonchai was the only boy who did not help. The other temple
boys tell the monk that Sri Thanonchai did not help. Sri Thanonchai is scared that the monk will
get mad at him so he reconstructs the roof himself. The other boys fixed the roof by twisting it to
the right, so Sri Thanonchai twists the roof to the left. When the monk arrives, Sri Thanonchai
asks his friends “which way did you twist the roof?” His friends answer “to the right”. The monk
looks up and see that the roof is twisted to the left so he believes that Sri Thanonchai was the
one who constructed the roof
End

The King punishes Sri Thanonchai by sending him to stay on an isolated island. Luckily foreigners
visit on a boat. Sri Thanonchai hides on the boat to get a ride to Market. During the ride, he sees the
foreigners bring two big watermelons, both cut in half. The foreigners say that they will bring these
two watermelons to gambling with the king. Sri Thanonchai knows what is happening, so he hides in
the Palace. The next day, the foreigners bring the two watermelons to the king, and ask him to guess
how many seeds are in the watermelons. If the king wins the foreigner will give the king everything
he has but if the king loses, the king has to give the foreigner the city. At this time the king is
thinking of Sri Thanonchai and asks a soldier to go and get him. Suddenly Sri Thanonchai appears
and volunteers to guess the number of seeds. He pretends to do complicated calculations but gives the
correct number of seeds in the watermelon as he has seen it before. This feat allows him to return and
work in the palace.

INSTRUCTION: Answer the following questions in 2-3 sentences and direct to the point.

1. What is the significance of the title to the story’s plot?

 The title of a story function as a hind to the overall idea of the story. When people tries to
read a story, some people know what kind of story is that based on the title and some titles
also identifies the genre of a story if it is a folktale, horror and many other genre. The
importance of the title to a story is that it captures the attention of the readers that can make
them read the story.

APPLICATION: Answer the following questions in 3-5 sentences only. Cite your own
observations and do not just depend on what is published by literary critics online.

 In “May Day Eve”, how did Joaquin incorporate magic realism as main theme of the story?
Have you had any superstitious belief that your family believed in through generations?
 The author of the narrative achieves magical realism with genuine conditions. By showing
someone how to look into the future. It seems terrifying to think you can see the face of a
future wife/husband. As we can see in the narrative, her grandmother performs rituals in
order to heal someone's illness; nevertheless, this is still in progress.
 In the poem, “The Conversion”, do you think the persona was successfully converted into a
straight man? What could have happened if the conversion did not take place in the drum?
 Yes, but I believe that recognizing oneself demonstrates our gratitude for the gift we got
from God. We live in a terrible world where brutality and judgment are constant. It is
preferable to accept that we are born imperfectly perfect. However, there is a risk that
conversion will not occur since most individuals are terrified of rejection and discrimination.

APPLICATION:
Create your own version of a legend of a Philippine kakanin or rice cake.

 A lovely, innocent child named Vegan was reared by a nasty stepmother, a sister of her
mother who had lately returned from overseas, in a remote country where the supply of food
is equivalent to the number of the people living in the area. Vegan was adopted after being
an orphan at a young age. Vegan was treated disgracefully and unfairly by her stepmother
months afterwards. She sobbed a lot in the dark chamber and begged the Lord and her
parents for help. Vegan didn't notice that she fell asleep while crying. Vegan had a dream
about her parents saying something she can't remember. The next day, she discovered a box
in the old room where her parents formerly resided. When she opened it, she saw a message
regarding her father's masterpiece. In a covered container, he noticed a cup of grilled rice.
The next day, he attempted to make it, and it became one of his daily pleasures. Vegan later
became well-known in the community for her distinctive rice cakes and had five branches of
her company.

APPLICATION: Answer the following in your own words. Use only 2-3 sentences per
question.

1. Explain Ho Xuan Huang’s symbolism of the pavilion in her poem.

 The term "pavilion" refers to a tent or semi-permanent construction. Ho Xuan Huang most
likely used this emblem to represent his observance of the outer world. Meanwhile, "The
Jackfruit" denotes plenty and the fruits of one's labor.
2. What is the tone of the poem “Autumn Sadness”? How did this personal appeal to you?

 The poem has a lonely tone, as seen by the first line, "Fall melancholy stammering, no
longer able to express a word, 'O fall, the love of autumn is so sorry." This poem speaks to
me since it represents my introverted personality.
Lesson 5: Literature of Myanmar and Cambodia

3. The Oil from the coconut flesh can be used as oil for coocking and for hair treatment.
4. The water of the coconut is used for beverages.
5. The wood taken from the coconut tree Is used for building houses.

ANALYSIS: Read the folktale from Burmese literature and explain the symbolism of the
coconut to Myanmar’s culture based on the story.

 Myanmar is noted for its golden dome pagodas and swaying coconut palms. Coconut trees
were formerly known as gon-bin in Myanmar, which translates to "mischief-tree" maker's in
English. The narrative is well known in this nation since centuries ago, a raft carrying three
individuals arrived on the Burmese shore. The occupants on this raft were transported to the
king. When the king interrogated them, he found that they had been exiled from their own
realm for their transgressions. Coconut holds a distinct and elevated place among the several
commodities used in religious gifts to Almighty God. Aspects of Burmese culture are
especially visible at religious locations. The terrain is dominated by Buddhist pagodas or
stupas, earning the nation the moniker "Land of Pagodas."

Philippine literature and discuss what you know about it.

 The importance of the oral tradition "Vorvong and Sorvong" is that it contains norms and
values that have been passed down through centuries through tales and stories. The bulk of
stories emphasize finding peaceful solutions to problems. 'Biag ni Lam- ang" is an example
of a story in Philippine literature. Where the subject stressed in this narrative is love for the
father, that the son would do anything to save the father who has vanished and may be in
danger, and it focuses more on war and a type of love story.

Activity

INSTRUCTION: Study the photo below and answer the following questions later.

Name of this structure: Angkor Wat Exact Location: Krong Siem Reap, Cambodia

Symbolic Meaning to Khmer History:

 It has been said that Angkor was a "lost city." In the middle of the 15th century, as a result of
invasions from Thailand and by the Chams from Vietnam, Angkor was deserted to the
jungle. It was not until the middle of the 17th century that the former capital of the Khmers
was "rediscovered." Angkor had been abandoned to the jungle in the middle of the 15th
century. The Khmers had access to guidance or instruction regarding the meaning of life one
thousand years ago, and the ruins of Angkor have the keys that are necessary to grasp what
that guidance or instruction was. Although the form of the instruction was profoundly
affected by the country's links with India, it was also anchored in the common experience of
man, regardless of when, where, or what culture he lived in at the time. The core concepts of
this instruction are conveyed to students through the use of symbols or keys. These symbols
or keys can take the shape of vocal allegories or visual analogies, such as parables and
myths. Both types may be found in the planning, construction, and decoration of the temples
and sacred city that make up Angkor. These aspects include the conception, design, and
materials used.
Lesson 6: Literature of Laos and Brunei

ACTIVITY

INSTRUCTION: Study the photo here and answer the questions in analysis.

ANALYSIS

1. What is the significance of the image above to Laotian culture?

 The epic of San Sinxay has had an effect on Laotian culture, particularly on the crucial event
known as Khao Phansa, which takes place during Buddhist festivals. Monks are expected to
remain at their own temples throughout this period in order to focus on meditation and the
study of the Buddha's teachings. Ordinary people can gain virtue during Khao Phansa by
giving offerings to their local temple and listening to monks sing Jtaka legends such as
Vetsantra and, in the past, Sinxay. Both of these events take place within the temple.

2. How is that image similar to Indian culture’s “The Ramayana” character?

 San Sinxay was tied to the Ramayana figure in the same manner that many people think
Rama was a previous incarnation of a future Buddha. Many paintings and wood relief
sculptures on temple doors and windows recounted the Rama narrative. In addition,
numerous palm-leaf manuscripts from Laos contain shorter versions of the Lao Ramayana,
Lam Pha Lam. This demonstrates that the narrative was well-liked throughout the country,
both in cities and in rural areas.

2. Write a one-paragraph realizations on the ASEAN literary pieces and its impact to you as
a Filipino reader.

 Studying Asean literature allows you to capture and make sense of what has happened and is
occurring in the world at large. Written words capture everyone's ideas who desired to share
them with the world. They are an integral aspect of a larger culture. So, if you want to be a
true member of human society, I believe you must participate in the growth and self-
discovery that literature provides, even if it is simply reading. In a societal sense, I see
literature as a collective attempt to comprehend and maximize the life we've all been given.
"Asean literature is a method to enrich our brains and make the world a better place, not only
through the beauty of its presence, but also through the ideas and genuine possibilities it
possesses."
