Objective:
To enable students
1. Understand the vital link between nutrition and health
2. Gain knowledge on functions, metabolism and effects of deficiency of nutrients
3. To gain knowledge on nutritional management in normal & disease condition
Unit- I
Basic concepts of Health, Mortality, Morbidity, IMR, MMR, Nutrition, Nutrients,
Nutrition Requirement, Balanced diet, recommended Dietary Allowances, Relationship between
health & Nutrition, Assessment of Nutritional Status.
Energy- Basic Concepts, Definition and Components of Energy Requirement, Energy
Imbalance, Calorie Requirement-BMR, SDA, Physical Activity, Factors Affecting Energy
Requirement and Expenditure, Factors affecting BMR.
Nutrients & their Classification; Macro Nutrients –Sources, Functions and Effects on the
Body; Micro Nutrients - Sources, Functions and Effects on the Body; Fat Soluble Nutrients -
Sources, Functions and Effects on the Body; Water Soluble Nutrients - Sources, Functions and
Effects on the Body; Digestion, Absorption & Metabolism of Carbohydrates, Lipids and
Proteins.
Unit- II
Nutritional need during normal stages of life- Infancy, Childhood, adolescence, pregnancy,
lactation and old age; Diet in exercises, Sports, games & athletics , Nutrition & Immunity, Food
allergy & Management.
Disease Management with diet: Therapeutic Adaptations of Normal Diet, Importance &
Modification of Normal Diet to Therapeutic Diets, Diabetes, Renal diseases, Anaemia, PEM,
Peptic Ulcer, Constipation, Malabsorption syndrome, Liver diseases like jaundice, Hepatities etc.
HBP, LBP, Atherosclerosis, Gall bladder disease, Cancer, Arthritis, Obesity & Underweight.
