The Wounded

Ego

Iʼll introduce 4 key

terms

The Id , Ego ,
Superego and
Neurosis

Weʼre all familiar

with Jeff Bezos
the worldʼs richest
man
Albert Einstein
greatest scientist
Strive Masiwa
founder of Econet
and a billionaire
Etc
but how many are
familiar with
Sigmund Freud ,
Alfred
Adler ,Great
William James

We all love
_Learning _ but
how many love
_learning How to
learn_

We all _think_ but

how many know
_how they think_
We all eat but how
many are aware of
the nutritional
value it has on our
brains.

We all breath
oxygen and
exhale Carbon
dioxide but how
many have
explored and
investigated the
use of oxygen in
our brains?

There was one

man who got most
fascinated by the
brain and itʼs
psychic activities
Sigmund Freud
(1856 -1939)
others have read
about him and
others are still yet
to know about
him.
Heʼs termed the
father of
psychology, he
proposed many
theories on
behavior,
personality,
counseling
procedures.

The most
fascinating
theories proposed
on personality are
still a debate but
psychologist have
found them worth
appreciating. They
explain the
psychic activities
in a simpler way.

Freud's
_personality
theory_ (1923)
saw the psyche
structured into
three parts, the
id, ego and
superego, all
developing at
different stages in
our lives. These
are systems, not
parts of the
brain, or in any
way physical.

● Id

The id is the
primitive and
instinctive
component of
personality. It
consists of all the
inherited. The id
is the _impulsive_
(and unconscious)
part of our
psyche which
responds directly
and immediately
to basic urges,
needs, and
desires.
The id is not
affected by reality,
logic or the
everyday world,
as it operates
within the
unconscious part
of the mind.

Writers and poets

term the id , _The
Child in you_
They usually say
sometimes you
have to let the
child in you once
or twice a day to
experience
happiness.
I donʼt second
with that and
neither do I rebut
it but letʼs proceed
Since the id is not
afffected by logic
and reality it just
seeks pleasure
and does not care
about
consequences or
punishments

Have you ever

been so eager to
do something that
you know is
wrong, such that
you ended up
convincing
yourself and be
like:

_“Come what may

“_

This Id was at
play.

● Ego

This is a common
word I presume.
How many are
familiar with it.
What do you think
it is Alphas?

The ego is 'that

part of the id
which has been
modified by the
direct influence of
the external
world.' (Freud,
1923, p. 25)
The ego develops
to mediate
between the
unrealistic id and
the external real
world. It is the
decision-making
component of
personality.
Ideally, the ego
works by reason,
whereas the id is
chaotic and
unreasonable.
The ego is the
conscious (_weʼre
aware of
processes_)
whereas the Id is
pre-conscious
(_weʼre unaware
of its processes_)

For example
When weʼre faced
with _stealing_
impulses from the
id, the Ego comes
in, gives reasons
why the item must
be stolen and
reasons why it
must not. Then
whatever decision
now comes from
the Ego.

● Super-ego

The superego
incorporates the
_values, morals
and principles of
society _ which
are learned from
one's parents and
others.
The superego's
function is to
control the _id's
impulses_,
especially those
which society
forbids, such as
short temper,
aggression,
indiscipline.

The superego
consists of _two
systems: _

The _conscience_
and the _ideal
self_. The
conscience can
punish the ego
through causing
feelings of guilt.

That is: if the id

made you do
something that is
against the morals
of the society the
super-Ego
knowing what is
right and wrong
may then punish
you by feelings of
guilt
Sounding Familiar
right

Like the id, the

ego seeks
pleasure (i.e.,
tension
reduction) and
avoids pain, but
unlike the id, the
ego is concerned
with devising a
realistic strategy
to obtain
pleasure. If the
ego fails in its
attempt to use
the reality
principle or find a
solution.

It gets Wounded

And Neurosis
results:
-a relatively mild
mental illness that
is not caused by
organic disease,
involving
symptoms of
stress
(depression,
anxiety, obsessive
behaviour,
hypochondria) but
not a radical loss
of touch with
reality.

We once
mentioned that
the Ego mediates
between the Id
and the super-Ego
These work hand
in hand

The Ego then gets

Wounded when
the impulses and
desires from the
id are in conflict
with the superego
Your id wants to
do something wild
but your superego
is preventing you
from doing so.
The Ego cannot
make a realistic
decision so you
end up admiring
and following wild
people because it
seems no harm to
the Id or superego
but the ego
somehow thinks it
has solved the
conflict.
When the id and
super-ego are in
conflict
The Ego devises
methods to
alleviate the
tension
It does so in
following
strategies :

– Unconscious
defense
mechanism

The one who was

once cheated by
loved ones can
relate..he now
avoids falling
deeper inlove so
as to avoid pain.
One whose trust
was once broken
Now trust less to
avoid being hurt
again
He who was once
hit by a car now
avoids walking in
roads where
thereʼre too many
cars.
Our everyday
experiences
– Self pity

Sometimes the
Wounded Ego
cannot come up
with a good
solution but
somehow it
always thinks it
has done its best.
One who was
once heartbroken
can also feel
inferior, less
human and lose
self esteem
One who was
once cyber bullied
can no longer post
their photos on
social media and
may also feel self
pity..feeling
undeserving and
unloved

These strategies
depend on the
strength of the
Ego also termed
as Mental
strength

And the strength

varies from
individual to
individual

Healing the
Wounded Ego

The best ways to

boost mental
strength
– read self help

books
– focus on self

development
– exercise
– eat balanced

diet
– realize that
youʼre special
– focus on
positivity
– focus on the
people who
gives you
support and
who show
appreciation

Under any stress

try to:
– focus on the

positive side
or self growth
– adopt a coping

mechanism
that will lead
to healthy and
fruitful
relationships
– Always seek to
make peace
and build trust

● Exercise every
day. Thirty
minutes is
best, but even
a 15-minute
walk can help
you feel better.
● Talk to
someone.
Tell family and
friends whatʼs
fueling your
anxiety, and
let them know
how they can
help.
● Get enough
sleep.
A lack of sleep
can worsen
anxiety and
stress. Aim for
8 hours of
shut-eye every
night.
● Cut back on
alcohol and
caffeine.
They can also
make anxiety
worse. Drink
water instead.
● Eat well-
balanced
meals.
Healthy meals
and snacks
boost your
energy. Be
sure to eat
every meal:
breakfast,
lunch, and
dinner.
● Reframe your
thoughts. Itʼs
not always
easy, but try to
replace
negative
thoughts with
positive ones.
Ask yourself:
Is what Iʼm
worried about
really as bad
as I think?
● Write it down.
Track what
triggers your
anxiety, and
then look for
patterns.
Learn better
ways to handle
it next time.

What excites me is
tht weʼre all still in
touch with reality
and we have a
chance to still find
peace and
happiness within

sophisticated as it
is, the brain can
be put under our
subjection and
read like weʼre
reading a
newspaper it only
takes a willful
individual to
understand his
own psychic
activities.
