Abstract
For our final project we chose the field Developmental Psychology, and we, the group
members, decided to visit an orphanage to spend the time with the kids who are mentally
suffering and help them.

Problem Statement
To visit an orphanage, to help the kids and make them happy or divert their mind from their
regular activities.

What are Orphanages? And their Purpose?

Orphanage is an institution or a group home for the orphans or children, allocated to take care
of them. Children or orphans in an orphanage come with various reasons because their
biological families cannot support or take care of them i.e., the parents may have passed away
or may be abusive etc.
The purpose of the orphanage is to provide shelter to the children who are alone in this world,
having no parents around. Orphanages provide children a healthy lifestyle and education side
by side so they can become stable in their future. They give all the possible opportunities to
the homeless children.

Advantages and Disadvantages of orphanages

Advantages of an orphanages is that the children are not alone and there is someone who can
take care of them like a family, they take care of the children without parents so that they
don’t feel alone. They work for the children’s better future. This is such a great step by a
society to help the little kids from different backgrounds and reasons. We all as a society and
good human beings should help the orphanages managements, it is everyone’s duty to make
the society better and help the children who live without their families.
Disadvantages are that at some or many orphanages the children don’t get the proper
attention, and this can lead to attachment disorders (RAD). Or the children are at the risk of
getting harassed or sexually abused, because in this world you cannot trust anyone around
you, and this can lead to traumatical childhood of the targeted kid, and they get depressed for
the rest of their life until they get a proper treatment.

Discussion
The group members visited the orphanage, Bait-e-Mariam (Orphans in need OIN). We used
the reference of our group member (Misbah Ahsan). The orphanage is specifically for girls. It
is a school and an orphan home. We decided to make gift bags for the children and distribute
among them. The gift bags included hair pins for girls, coloring books, coloring pencils, and
stationery (pencil, rubber sharpener). The plan was to spend some time with the kids who feel
lonely and console them. As a psychologist, it is our main task to bring something different to

our society in a positive way, for its betterment. So, we thought going to an orphanage will
help the kids in many ways i.e., their emotional or intellectual growth etc. The kids were
happy to see us, we were only permitted to visit the Montessori Section. We did some
activities with them and gave the winners the gift bags we brought with us. The management
there was co-operative and helped us a lot and the environment was good.
Our main goal was to observe the management and help the kids. The management was kind
and polite with us and with the kids too.

Results
The feedback from the kids was good, they enjoyed the time we spent with them.

Conclusion
From our short visit to an orphanage, we learned and experienced a lot but most importantly
we learned that you should always be grateful with what you have and to make someone
happy you just need to spare a little amount of time to give it to someone who needs it. This
visit was made specifically to help the kids grow emotionally but instead we also learned a
lot. After visiting the orphanage, you start appreciating the little things in your life which you
did not consider before. You for once start appreciating the things as you look at the bigger
picture, that you have your own family who can take care of you and forget about the
materialistic things.

Orphanage we visited
It is located near Morgah. Orphans is need (OIN), is a UK based charity, working in Pakistan,
since 2016. They support and provide education or home to over 1,200 orphan kids and give
food parcels to widows.

Gift bags for the children

All the group members collectively bought the things for the children and made separate gift
bags for the little kids.

4
Activities

1) Musical Chair
We played this activity with the children and gave them gifts to appreciate them.

2) Coloring/drawing
This activity was done by the kids, and we reinforced them by giving little gifts such as
candies, hair pins, paintings etc.
