1- Objective
Observing the response of the first order R-C and R-L circuits.

2- Theoretical Background/literature review

The natural response of an R-C circuit can be expressed as
1
− 𝑡
𝑉𝑐 (𝑡) = 𝑉𝑐 (∞) + ( 𝑉𝑐 (0) − 𝑉𝑐 (∞)) 𝑒 𝑅𝐶 for t ≥ 0

3- Test Procedure
3-1 Test Setup

3-2 Materials and Equipments

• Scope
• Function generator
• Power supply
• Resistors
• Caps
• Inductors

3-3 Tasks
• Construct the R-C circuit of Figure 1.
• Apply the square pulse generator to produce a periodic response of the circuit that
appears clearly on the oscilloscope. The period of the source is adjusted to be at least 10-
20 times higher than the calculated time constant of the circuit. This is necessary, so that
the capacitor reaches steady state, in both charging and discharging intervals.
• Show current & voltage plots on the oscilloscope.
• Measure the circuit time constant by the 63% decay method described above. Plot on a
millimeter paper OR take copy of the scope plot over one period of the voltage and
current response. Use appropriate scale. Label the axes. Transfer measurements from the
oscilloscope to the paper or to an excel sheet.

4- Results

1
− 𝑡
V(t) = E – E 𝑒 𝑅𝐶

time constants ꞇ = RC = 500*0.1 = 5*10−5
