A Tree Plantation Drive

Activity Completion Report

The “Vana Mahotsav” which is celebrated every year in India to inculcate among the general
public the need for planting more and more trees and preserving them for better and green
environment. Trees cleanse the climate by absorbing carbon dioxide from the environment
and releasing oxygen. The trees cool the environment through their leaves by absorbing the
sun heat. Thus, there occurs cooling in the atmosphere. The trees provide shades to houses
and streets. On October 04, 2014, around 52 volunteers of the NSS unit & Department of
Social Welfare, Baba Farid College of Engineering & Technology successfully completed the
event of Tree Plantation at Village Bhadaur, District Barnala. Plantations of trees is
important as they improve the life and fulfil essential needs of mankind. During
photosynthesis, the trees breakdown food materials and consume carbon dioxide. Resultantly
with the help of sunlight, the trees produce carbohydrates. Moreover, trees support life by
providing habitat to different species such as squirrels, bees and birds.
The volunteers were motivated by the Respected Principal, BFCET prior to the
activity and advised to the volunteers to think differently for the Society to make positive
changes and to make the improvements. He oriented the NSS volunteers by notifying the
importance of NSS for them as well as society. He shared his past experiences with
volunteers that how he got the success through NSS. He said that “In society all the human
beings are comprise equal importance, no matter with the Men or Women. ” He also said that
the dedication is must to accomplish the goals and dreams in life. His address passed a
message of kindness & being helpful to the needy people.
After the inspirational words, all moved towards the place where tree plantation took
place. This Plantation Programme, played role on the health & hygiene and cleanliness and
awareness drive by the youngsters. With generous support of the college, volunteers were
given about 67saplings from nearby Nursery and brought them into the village and started
planting saplings. All the volunteers formed several groups of 7-8and were advised to plant
two saplings in the gardens, courtyards and safe places of wherever possible in the village.
The activity began with the help of Gram Panchayat Representatives &few other people from
the town also who actively participated in this tree plantation ceremony and enthusiastically
interacted with students about environment, environmental crises like pollution etc. They
planted the saplings of Neem, Ashoka and another tress as well. In the afternoon, an
awareness programme on environment was conducted. A role play was also organised by
volunteers, they disseminated the message of health and hygiene.
While interacting with the students & local residents, Er. Amandeep Singh (Dean,
NSS Unit & Department of Social Welfare) said that it is a well-considered fact that trees
function as important agents in the prevention of natural calamities like soil erosion, maintain
ecological balance, resource medicines, provide fresh oxygen etc. These kind of awareness
drives of tree plantation did not remain confined to cities only, but it spread to villages
whereby the villagers also can know the importance of planting more trees which can
improve their living environment and turn their villages into beautiful and green places full of
joy. He also said that people from all across the country gear up for planting trees at public
places like parks, roads, railway platforms, hospitals, universities, colleges, schools, degraded
forest areas, etc. However, mere plantation of trees would not help to preserve ecology.
Trees are the only source of producing fresh oxygen in environment as they help to reduce
the level of CO2. He expressed his concern his all that already the whole World is
experiencing the problem of global warming and to recover from such problem planting trees
has become one of the few important measures we can undertake.

Further, volunteers were make it sure by the local residents that proper care and
attention like they all offer selflessly to our children will be taken by them for the saplings
planted by following the several measures like regular watering, dose of organic manure, tree
guards, avoiding plants from construction waste and well-drained deep sandy soil etc. to
grow and expand in a healthy manner. Students too shared their experience and agreed in
unison to plant more and more trees on special occasions such as their birthdays and other
family ceremonies in upcoming days. It was also decided by the villagers to visit the
plantation site regularly to take care of trees. This plantation drive successfully advised to the
students and residents to think differently for the Society to make positive changes and to
