Confucianism

The goal of Confucianism

The ultimate objective of this system is for human


beings to achieve happiness for himself/herself.

In order to achieve happiness is to first deal with


peace.

Abolishing war is a big solution; Confucianism deals


for to prevent bloodshed with each other.
Confucianism
The term “Confucianism” refers to the
system of ethical and philosophical
teachings to have good moral conduct.

This system composes a symbol of a


Chinese character called “shui” as a
representation of source of life. (Shui
means water in Chinese)

This system was founded by a


philosopher named Kongzi (better Confucian symbol
known as Confucius)
Confucius
Confucius/Kongzi was officially
known as: Kong Qui or Kung Fu-
Tzu.

He was a Chinese teacher,


philosopher, and a political
figure, meaning individuals who
are entrusted by the public in
helping the government.

Biography

Confucius was born in 551


BC in the state of Lu
(present-day southwestern
Shandong)

His father died when he was


three years old, and because
of that, his mother took care
Confucius visualized as painted of him and taught him poetry,
on Chinese cloth. music and ancient
ceremonies.
At the age of 23, his mother passed away, which resulted
in Confucius mourning for three years, but while doing so,
he secluded and isolated himself in his home.

Over the next three years, Confucius was enabled to study


on philosophical ideas and teachings.

On the end of his period of seclusion, he became a teacher,


teaching people from all classes.
During his career as a teacher, he taught a small group of
disciples and followers that were interested in his
teachings.

His fame as a man of learning and character who had a


great reverence for Chinese ideals and customs soon
spread throughout Lu.

Confucius was very impressed and interested of Lao


Tzu, the founding figure of Taoism; he even had a
number of interviews with him.
Here are some basic principles of Confucianism

Treat others kindly

A man should have good morals and ethics

Family was important and ancestors were to be


respected

A true man had the qualities of integrity,


righteousness, goodness, and loyalty
Death
Confucius spent his last years peacefully in Lu.

One morning Confucius felt the approach of death. He


walked about the courtyard, humming the words: “The great
mountain must collapse, the mighty beam must break, and
the wise man wither like a plant.”

He said to himself: “No wise ruler arises, and no one in the


Empire wishes to make me his teacher. The hour of my
death has come.” He lay down and died eight days later at
age 72.

Confucius died in 479 BC.

He was and is still buried in the


Cemetery of Confucius where
he and about 100,000 of his
descendants rest.

destroyed and rebuilt over the

Legacy
Confucius left a big impact on the people of China and the
globe; his ideas and teachings were praised and inspired by
philosophers and teachers around the world, like French
philosopher Voltaire.

Many people still follow his teachings today, having good


morals and ethics was the correct way to live life, he said.

Although we do not know much about him, we must thank


him for constructing the foundations of our morals and
ideas throughout our history, and for many more years to
come.
