SYLLABUS FOR THE SUBJECT

Unit 1
Drawing standards and geometrical construction Drawing standard SP: 46, Type of lines,
lettering, dimensioning, scaling conventions. Geometrical construction: Dividing a given straight
line into any number of equal parts, bisecting a given angle, drawing a regular polygon given one
side, special methods of constructing a pentagon and a hexagon.

Unit 2
Orthographic Projections and Projections of Points: Introduction to orthographic projection,
drawing of orthographic views of objects from their isometric views. Projection of points lying in
four quadrants.

Unit 3
Projections Lines and Planes and their Traces: Projection of lines parallel and perpendicular to
one or both planes, projection of lines inclined to one or both planes. Traces of lines. Projection
of planes parallel and perpendicular to one or both planes, projection of planes inclined to one or
both planes.

Unit 4
Projections of Solids: Types of solids, projections of solids with axis perpendicular and parallel to
HP and VP, solids with axis inclined to one or both the planes. Projection of spheres touching
each other.

Unit 5
Sectioning of Solids, Isometric Projections: Sectioning of solids: Section planes perpendicular to
one plane and parallel or inclined to other plane. Isometric projection: Isometric scale, drawing of
isometric projections from given orthographic views.

Unit 6
Development of surfaces and Introduction to Computer Aided Drafting: Development of
surfaces: Development of cylindrical and conical surfaces Development of prisms. Introduction
to computer aides: Introduction to computer aided drafting, drafting packages and tools to make
drawings.

ASSIGNMENT NO. 02

1). Sketch the Orthographic projections in first Angle of the solids shown below. Work with free
hand, single stroke sketches. Draw proportionally while not giving much importance to the
dimensions. The front view is in direction of the arrow (bottom left) for all figures.

2). Draw the projection of the following points on the same ground line keeping the projectors 30
mm apart. Proper dimensioning must be done as per BIS standards.
(i) 25 mm above H.P. and 25 mm in front of V.P.
(ii) 25 mm below the H.P. and 25 mm in front of V.P.
(iii) 25 mm above the H.P. and in the V.P.
Assignment No. 03 (Projection of point and plane)

1. A straight line AB of true length 100 mm has its end A 20 mm above HP and 30 mm in front
of VP. The top view of the line is 80 mm and front view is 70 mm. Draw the projections (TV and
FV) of the line AB and obtain the true inclinations of the line AB with HP and VP.

2. Straight line AB is 40 mm long. End A is 10mm above HP and 15 mm in front of VP. FV of


the line is inclined at 45° and TV is inclined at 60° to XY line.  Draw the projections of line AB
(FV and TV) and obtain the true inclination of line AB with HP and VP.

3. Draw the Top view and front view of a circular lamina if the surface of the lamina is
perpendicular to HP and inclined at 30° to VP.

4. Draw the front view, top view and side view of a square lamina. The surface of the lamina is
inclined at θ to HP and perpendicular to VP.  

Assignment No. 04 (Projection of solid)

1. Draw the projections of a pentagonal prism, base 25 mm side and axis 60 mm long, resting on
one of its rectangular faces on H.P. with the axes inclined at 300 to the V.P.
2. A hexagonal pyramid, base 25 mm side and axis 50 mm long, has an edge of its base on the
ground. Its axis is inclined at 300 to the ground and parallel to V.P. Draw its projections.
3. Draw the projections of a cone, base 50 mm φ and axis 65 mm long, when it is resting on the
ground on a point on the base circle with axis making angle 30 0 with the H.P. and 450 with the
V.P.
Assignment No. 05 (Section of solids and Isometric projection)

1. A cone, base 70 mm diameter, axis 75 mm long and resting on its base on H.P., is cut by a
vertical section plane, the H.T. of which is 12 mm away from the top view of the axis. Draw the
sectional front view, top view and the true shape of the section if:
(i.) H.T of vertical section plane makes an angle 60o with reference line xy,
(ii.) Vertical section plane is parallel to V.P.
2. A hollow cylinder, 50 mm outside diameter, axis 80 mm long and thickness 10 mm has its
axis parallel to the V.P. and inclined at 60o to the horizontal. It is cut into two equal halves by a
horizontal section plane. Draw its sectional top view.
3. What is difference between ‘isometric view’ and ‘isometric projection’? Explain.
4. Draw the isometric projection of the model of steps, two views of which are shown in the
Figure .
Assignment No. 06 (DEVELOPMENT OF SURFACES)

1. A right circular cone having length of its axis 70 mm and diameter of its base 50 mm is resting
on the horizontal ground. An ant starts its journey from a point at the circumference of its base
goes around the cone and reaches at the same point. Find the length of the shortest path of the ant
and show it in the plan and elevation of the cone. Also show this shortest path on the
development of lateral surface of the cone.
2. Draw the development of lateral surface of the cylinder having diameter 80 mm and height 70
mm with a square hole of side 20 mm in it as shown in Figure. The axis of square hole bisects
the axis of cylinder which passes through two of the corner edges of square hole.

3. A 50 mm cylindrical pipe branches off at 90o from a 75 mm cylindrical main pipe as shown in
Figure. Draw the development of both the pipes at the joint. Assume suitable lengths for the
main pipe as well as for the branch pipe.

1. A point C is 40 mm below HP and 30 mm behind VP. Draw its projection.
2. Draw the orthographic projections of the following points.

(c) Point R is 32 mm. below H.P and 45 mm behind VP.

SHEET NO. 05 TITLE: Projection of line


1. Line AB is 75 mm long and it is 30 0 & 400 Inclined to HP & VP respectively. End A is 12mm
above HP and 10 mm in front of VP. Draw projections. Line is in 1st quadrant.
2. Line AB 75mm long makes 450 inclination with VP while it’s FV makes 550. End A is 10 mm
above HP and 15 mm in front of VP .If line is in 1 st quadrant draw it’s projections and find it’s
inclination with HP.

SHEET NO. 06 TITLE: Projection of plane


1. A pentagonal plane of side 40 mm is perpendicular to HP and makes an angle of 45° with VP.
Draw its projections.
2. A regular hexagon of side 20 mm has one of its sides inclined at 30° to VP. Its surface
makes an angle of 60° with the ground. Draw its projections.
SHEET NO. 07 TITLE: Projection of solid
1. Draw the projections of a pentagonal pyramid, base 35 mm side and axis 60 mm long, having
its base on H.P. and an edge of the base parallel to the V.P. Also draw its side views.
2. Draw the projections of a cone, base 70 mm φ and axis 100 mm long, lying on the H.P. on one
of its generators with the axis parallel to V.P.
3. A hexagonal prism, base 50 mm side and height 40 mm has a hole of 40 mm φ drilled
centrally through its ends. Draw its projections when it is resting on one of its corners on the
H.P. with its axis inclined at 60o to the H.P. and two of its faces parallel to V.P.

1. A cube of 40 mm long edges is resting on the H.P. on one of its faces with a vertical face
inclined at 300 to the V.P. It is cut by a section plane parallel to V.P. and 10 mm away from the
axis and further away from V.P. Draw its sectional front view and top view.
2. A pentagonal pyramid, base 40 mm side and axis 75 mm long, has its base horizontal and an
edge of the base parallel to the V.P. A horizontal section plane cuts it at a distance of 30 mm
from the base. Draw its front view and sectional top view.
