1) FOCUS
In TOEFL Listening you do not need to understand everything. Yeah, that’s right! It's not necessary to
get a high TOEFL Listening score. Your score does not depend on whether you understand everything
but on whether you understand the important things. You only need to understand the information that
is necessary to answer the questions correctly. In TOEFL Listening you will listen to a ton of
information. If you try to understand everything this may even lower your score because you do not
focus anymore which means you will not know the important information when answering the
questions. This means that you must focus on the stuff that gets you points - ignore the rest! Now the
crucial question is: how do you know what you need to focus on? Let’s have a look at the next tip.

2) KNOW THE QUESTION TYPES

In TOEFL Listening you will always get similar questions for a particular type of task. For example,
usually there is a task where a student goes to see a professor. If you listen to such a conversation, it is
probable that you will be asked why the student goes to see the professor. If you know that beforehand,
you will be in a good position because when you listen to the passage you can already anticipate
potential questions - and normally some of the questions you anticipate will be asked. This means if
you know the types of tasks in TOEFL Listening you will be able to focus on the right things when
listening.

3) TAKE GOOD NOTES

To get a high score in TOEFL Listening you must take notes in such a way that they help you to answer
the questions correctly. What is really hard in TOEFL Listening is that you get so much information
and you cannot listen to the stuff again, this means that you can only rely on your notes and on your
memory . Your notes must contain the information that you need for the questions. Only write down
keywords, use your own words, try to abbreviate words whenever possible and use symbols.

4) CHOOSE AN ANSWER
If you are unsure which answer you should choose, go with your gut. Do not skip the question.
Better choose an answer you are uncertain with than no answer at all. You do not get penalty points in
TOEFL Listening and there is always the possibility that you choose the correct answer. Take that
chance!
