CONSTRUCTION MACHINERY (MOBILE EQUIPMENT)

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

● prevent workplace accidents

● prevent personal injuries between moving equipment and workers

TWO LEADING CAUSE OF INJURIES AND FATALITIES ON CONSTRUCTION

SITES

● struck by operating or moving equipment (22%)

● caught in-between operating or moving equipment (18%)

PERSONS PUT AT RISK BY WORKING AROUND, OR BEING NEAR, HEAVY

EQUIPMENT WHILE IT IS OPERATING

A. DIRECT PARTICIPANTS
- need to be on site on regular basis

B. INDIRECT PARTICIPANTS
- need to be on site on a periodic basis

C. NON-PARTICIPANTS
- no direct need to be on site

MACHINERY USED IN CONSTRUCTION MANUALLY, ELECTRICALLY AND BY

FUELS

● Earthmoving Machinery
● Construction Vehicles
● Material Handling Equipment
● Construction Equipment
A. EARTHMOVING MACHINERY
- used to dig out large amount of earth, dig foundations and excavate

TYPES

● Hydraulic Excavators
● Loaders
● Bulldozers
● Compressors

a. HYDRAULIC EXCAVATORS
❖ are also called diggers.
❖ used for:
➢ digging trenches and foundations
➢ material handling
➢ demolitions
➢ heavy lifts

b. LOADERS
❖ used on construction sites to load material such as asphalts, debris, rock, sand,
gravels, etc. into other machineries

c. BULLDOZERS
- crawlers equipped with a substantial metal plate used to push large quantity of
rubble, soil, sand, etc. during construction

d. COMPRESSORS
- used to smooth surfaces within construction jobs

B. CONSTRUCTION VEHICLES

- heavy duty vehicles designed especially for executing construction

TYPES

● dumpers
● tippers
● trailers

ADVANTAGES OF CONSTRUCTION MACHINES

● More complex machines

● Replaced humans as source of power for machines

C. MATERIAL HANDLING EQUIPMENT

- used for the movement, storage, control and protection of materials, goods and
products throughout the process of manufacturing, distribution, consumption and
disposal.

TYPES

● transport equipment
● positioning equipment
● unit load formation equipment
● storage equipment

a. TRANSPORT EQUIPMENT
- used to move material from one location to another

SUBCATEGORIES

● conveyors

used when:

- material is to be moved frequently between specific points over a fixed path

- there is a sufficient flow volume

● cranes

used when:

- load is to be transported over variable (horizontal and vertical) paths within a

restricted area
- when there is insufficient (or intermittent) flow volume
● industrial trucks

used to:

- move materials over variable (horizontal) paths with no restrictions on the area
covered

b. POSITIONING EQUIPMENT
- used to handle material at a single location
- to feed, orient, load/unload, or otherwise manipulate materials so that they are in the
correct position for subsequent handling, machining, transport, or storage.

ADVANTAGES

● can raise the productivity of each worker

● can improve product quality and limit damage to materials and equipment
● can reduce fatigue and injuries when the environment is hazardous or inaccessible

c. UNIT LOAD FORMATION EQUIPMENT

- used to restrict materials so that they maintain their integrity when handled a single
load during transport and for storage

d. STORAGE EQUIPMENT
- used for holding or buffering materials over a period of time

D. CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT

● perform specific construction (or demolition) functions under power

● can be classified in accordance with their functions such as:
○ hoisting
○ excavating
○ hauling
○ grading
○ paving
○ drilling
○ pile driving
