● It is advised to use the available resources (only that are available at home). Do not step out of the
house to buy or order anything online specifically for the experiment.
● You need to ensure the safety of yours as well as the people around you.
● Although, you won’t be performing the task in the school lab but you need to take all safety measures
required.
● Wear gloves if using any chemical agents.
● Handle apparatus and glasswares (especially the fragile ones) with care
● Avoid spillage of any liquids.
● Cutting or while dealing with a burner, make sure you do it under adult supervision.
● Clean the work area or room after performing the experiments.

Present Offer for display, observation, examination or consideration.

State Give a specific name, value or other brief answer without explanation or calculation.

Task:
Keeping in mind the Objective B : Inquiring and Designing and Objective C: Processing and Evaluating ,
learners have to perform an Investigation at their home considering the real life situations. The Investigation
can be related to any concept learnt by you during your academic year.
For example:
- I want to investigate the effect of the amount of water on growth of Fenugreek (methi) plants.
This experiment can be done by sowing the seeds or parts of the Fenugreek plant in 3-4 different
bowls/Containers.
Then I will keep the amount of the soil the same in all the containers.
I will add different amounts of water in each bowl/Container. After observing them for some days, I can
measure the effect of the amount of water on their growth. Also such experiments can be performed for
different plants/ Vegetables.
- I want to investigate the effect of temperature on the sourness of the curd (while formation). We know that
sourness comes from the formation of bacteria in the milk which causes the formation of curd. This experiment
can be performed by keeping some amount of milk for the formation of curd in different conditions. One can be
kept in the closed cupboard, one in the kitchen and other in the refrigerator. After keeping them for some hours
I can measure the sourness of the curd by tasting them.

The learners can choose any experiment they feel they can perform at their home. The learners have to then
complete the investigation cycle given below, by answering the questions.
The learners must choose the experiment that can be performed with the resources available at their home
only, YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO GET ANY RESOURCES FROM OUTSIDE FOR THE EXPERIMENT.

Important Note: With every question, a starting sentence is written here by default. This will help the
learners to frame their answers in a better way. They have to add the remaining part of the answer after
this sentence.

Questions to be answered:

1) State the Aim of the Experiment.

I want to investigate how the density tower works.

2) Outline and Explain a testable hypothesis using scientific reasoning.

I can predict that the liquid with high/more density will sit at the bottom of the density tower. And the liquid
with the low/less density will float at the top of the tower. As they will be more/less dense than others.

3) Identify the Independent Variable and State how you will manipulate it.
Independent Variable: Manipulation:

Summer Homework (2020-21)
Grade: 8 Subject: Integrated Science

The density of the liquids The density is not dependent on anything but is
independent.

4) Identify the Dependent Variable and State how you will measure it.
Dependent Variable: Manipulation:

The dependent variable is the placement of the liquid This means that the layer where the liquid will sit in
on the density tower. the density tower.

5) Identify the Controlled Variable and State why and how will you control it.
Controlled Variable: Manipulation:

The controlled variable is the amount of the liquid The amount of the liquid in ml.

6) List all the safety measures that you will follow while performing the experiment.
The following will be the safety measures that I will be following during the experiment:
The safety measures are that:-
1. Wear gloves if using any chemical agents.
2. Handle apparatus and glasswares (especially the fragile ones) with care
3. Avoid spillage of any liquids.
4. Cutting or while dealing with a burner, make sure you do it under adult supervision.
5. Clean the work area or room after performing the experiments.

7) List all the materials required by you for the experiment.

The following is the list of materials that i will require during the experiment:
- Material A : (Quantity)
- Honey 50ml
- Dish soap 50ml
- Water 50ml
- Bolt 1
- Vegetable oil 50 ml
- A transparent cylinder 1

8) Design a logical and complete method for the execution of your investigation.
The following are the steps that i will be using to perform the experiment:
Step - 1 - take all the liquids and then according to you set it all in an order in which it would sit in the
cylinder.
Step - 2 - take all the liquids and then slowly add them in the cylinder.
Step - 3 - add all the liquids slowly so that it could maintain the layer and don’t get mixed.

9) Collect raw data.

Following Data has been Collected: The data that I collected was that the bolt in the transparent cylinder sat
at the bottom and the bolt was surrounded by honey. Then on top of the honey there was dish soap. Then

comes the water on the top of the dish soap. And then on the top of the cylinder comes the layer of the
vegetable oil.

10) Organise and Present data in tabular/graphical form.

?

11) State your observations from the data collected.

From the data presented above i can observe that : The observations were that when I added the vegetable
oil to the water it instantly rose to the top. Honey was at the bottom.

12) Outline the result obtained through your investigation.

From the observations made i can conclude that : The result is that the most dense liquid that I chose was
honey and the least dense liquid was the vegetable oil.

13) Explain the results using scientific reasoning.

The results of the experiment are because: The experiment has a result that the most dense liquids sit at the
bottom of the cylinder and the least dense liquids sit at the top of the cylinder. And in the middle there sits
the medium dense liquids.

14) Discuss the validity of the Hypothesis stated by you.

The Hypothesis stated by me that “I can predict that the liquid with high/more density will sit at the bottom of
the density tower. And the liquid with the low/less density will float at the top of the tower. As they will be
more/less dense than others.” , is valid (valid /Invalid /Partially Valid) , as: the result that I predicted was
the same as the outcome therefore the hypothesis is correct and valid.

15) Outline the validity of the method used by you to perform the investigation.
The method used by me is valid (Valid /Invalid /Partially Valid) as: the

Strengths of the method: are that we can understand it very easily

Weakness of the method: sre that there are very few steps.

16) State the Improvements and Extensions to the method selected by you to perform the investigation.
The following are the improvements and Extensions to the method: The improvements are that i should have
made more steps and then it would be more easy to follow the steps and then do it properly.
