Biology Cell Lab

Student Name(s): _____________________________ _____________________________ Objective: To observe and analyze plant and animals cells under a microscope. Lab Materials: Lab Coat Goggles Microscopes Latex gloves 10 Glass plates (cover slips) Medicine dropper Distilled water 5 Plant samples 4 Animal samples Iodine Methylene blue Colored pens or pencils Garbage dispenser (disposal of lab materials only)

ALL STUDENTS MUST WEAR CLOSED TOE SHOES. A STUDENT WHO FAILS TO WEAR CLOSED TOE SHOES WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE LAB AND WILL RECEIVE A ZERO FOR COMPLETION.

Procedures: Part A: Preparing for Lab Before beginning the lab students should physically prepare for the lab by following these procedures: 1. Proceed to your lab station when instructed to do so wearing closed toe shoes. 2. Check to make sure no materials are missing from the station. If any materials are missing notify the teacher as soon as possible. 3. Put on goggles, latex gloves and lab coat. 4. Make sure to write the name(s) at the top of this worksheet. 5. Listen to teacher demonstration on how to do the lab. 6. Begin working on lab after instructed to do so. Part B: Observing Plant Cells 1. Take a sample of the onion and place on the microscope slide. 2. Use a medicine dropper to obtain iodine. 3. Use 3 drops of iodine on the onion sample and place cover slip over it.

4. Place microscopic slide sample under the microscope and examine the cells at two different levels. 5. Sketch (in circles below) what you have seen before and after viewing the specimen under the microscope. 6. Below the picture write the magnification you viewed each image at. Make sure to use color for more detail. 7. Take a sample of another plant (grass, mushrooms, dandelion, leaf) and place it on a new microscope slide. 8. Use medicine dropper to obtain iodine. 9. Use 3 drops of iodine on the specimen and cover it with a new cover slip. 10. Place the microscopic slide sample under the microscope and examine the cell at two different levels. 11. Sketch (in circles below) what you have seen before and after viewing the specimen under the microscope. 12. Below the picture write the magnification you viewed each image at. Make sure to use color for more detail. 13. Repeat steps 7- 12 by choosing another plant sample. PLANT: _________________________

Take a sample of the feather and place on the microscope slide. Use medicine dropper to obtain iodine. Use 3 drops of iodine on the feather sample and cover with a cover slip. Place microscopic slide sample under the microscope and examine the cell at two different levels. 5. Sketch (in circles below) what you have seen before and after placing specimen under the microscope. 6. On the line below the picture write the magnification you viewed the image at. Make sure to use color for more detail. 7. Repeat steps 1-6 using two other animal samples (fish scales, dog hair, snake skin). ANIMAL: _________________________

Part D: Observing Plant and Animal Cells Using a Toxic Chemical 1. Choose one plant and one animal cell that you have already observed in previous lab procedures. 2. Using new microscopic slides, cover slips and solution place each specimen on a new slide. 3. Clean medicine dropper with distilled water and then gather methylene blue in the medicine dropper. 4. Use two drops of methylene blue for each cell. 5. Place a cover slip over each specimen and view the results under the microscope.

6. Sketch (in circles below) what you have seen before and after viewing specimen under the microscope. 7. Make sure to use color for more detail and write if the cell was dead or alive. PLANT CELL

After completing the testing part of the lab, please make sure to clean up your station by disposing all used specimens in the garbage dispenser(used for lab materials only) and clean all lab instruments using distilled water. Part E: Analysis 1. On a Microsoft Spreadsheet create your own data table to compare the following characteristics of the cells you tested: type of cells (animal or plant) colors of cells shape of cells alive or dead

Example : Cell Sample Dog Hair Type Animal Colors Black and white Shape slim, straight line Alive or Dead -------

2. Select all text and click all borders. 3. When finished please print out your spreadsheet using the class printer and turn in your work. 4. In Microsoft Word write a paper between 300-600 words about your findings. Your paper should include what you liked, what you didnt like, what was difficult and what you would have changed. 5. When finished please print out your paper using the class printer and turn in your work.
