Welcome to the exciting world of Year Ten Social Science!

This subject provides very important skills and understanding for you to become knowledgeable and responsible members of your community. The focus is on PEOPLE and
how they live together in SOCIETY. This year you will study three themes, one theme each term.

Topics and assessments Grade


THE PAST- This topic is about NZ’s involvement in international
conflicts, the reasons for our involvement and the impact that this has
had on NZ’s identity. The assessment is a graphic organizer on NZ’s
involvement in conflicts over time.
THE PRESENT – New Zealand has an MMP government. You will learn
how this works and how you can be involved. Specific issues facing
New Zealand today will be explored. The assessment is a writing task
about the impact of a government decision.
THE FUTURE – Today’s actions will shape the future of our country and
the world. In this topic you will take a look aspects of today’s world
that may impact the future such as technology, resource management
and the decisions of governments, companies and communities. The
assessment is perspectives on an environmental issue.
SOS WRITING – This will be a task that will assess your ability to write
in a Social Science way.
MID-YEAR SKILLS TEST – this will assess a variety of skills you have
learnt in the first half of the year including constructing and/or
interpreting graphs, maps, and text.
END-OF-YEAR SKILLS TEST – this will assess a variety of skills you have
learnt over the year including constructing and/or interpreting graphs,
maps, timelines, text and perspectives.
END OF YEAR WRITING TASK- This will assess SPAG, as well as report
style writing.

AS91043 Describe a social action – This is a Level 1 achievement


standard (4 credits). You will describe a social action and examine the
perspectives of different people and the impacts it has for society.

Each of your assessments will be recorded on your report. All assessments will be graded using Y (yet to
achieve), A (achieved), M (achieved with merit) and E (achieved with excellence).
