Eggshell as Alternative for making Chalk

Chapter 1

Introduction

Background of the study

An egg’s thin, rigid exterior is known as its shell. Like chalk, this is exceedingly brittle and is
prone to breaking. According to the research, calcium carbonate (CaCO3) crystals make up the
majority of an eggshell’s components. Since its pores are semipermeable, air and moisture can
travel through them. The bloom or cuticle, the shell’s thin exterior layer, serves as a barrier
against dust and pathogens.

Every solid substance has a distinct distinctive quality. This is the capacity for fragility. Brittle
solid materials can shatter into little bits. Glass and pottery provide us with more illustrations of
this.

Calcium carbonate, often known as CaC03, is the substance that makes up the majority of an
eggshell and is composed of the elements calcium (Ca), carbon ©, and oxygen (O).

The same substance Is used to manufacture chalks. For this reason, the researchers believe that
eggshells might be used to create chalk. The researchers hope to develop chalk to assist
schools, especially public schools, that lack the means or money to purchase chalk for the
instructors.

Eggshells Chalk

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine whether eggshells may serve as a viable substitute for creating
synthetic chalk. These issues were particularly tested in the study:

1. How pigmented is the eggshalk?

2. Will it write properly in;

a. Blackboard

b. Wall

c. Illustration board
3. Can the eggshalk will still write even when it’s wet?

4. Will the eggshalk leaves chalk powder after used?

Formulating the Hypotheses

Two hypotheses were made by the researchers to address the question whether eggshells are
good alternative ingredients for making chalk. The following are theareypotheses:

h0. The eggshells are a good alternative ingredient for making chalk.

h1. The eggshells are not a good alternative ingredient for making chalk.

Scope and Delimitation

The research will last from October 2022 to February 2023. The researchers' topic is "How to
make chalks out of eggshells.” To test their hypotheses, the researchers will conduct an
experiment. Eggshells as a substitute material for manufacturing chalk are the only topic
covered in this paper. We picked this study to look into the possibility of using eggshell as a
chalk substitute in more detail. The eggshells are the main topic of our study. We utilize
eggshells because they contain the same chemical as chalk (calcium carbonate). They have
similar characteristics as well, such as the ability to easily break.

In this research project, we will devise a quicker and more cost-effective method of producing
chalks. Using only a few simple materials is preferable to buying an expensive machine. Utilizing
recycled materials, such as eggshells, which is what the researchers in this IP will do, can help
you save money. Since we won't require as much electricity, more power will be saved. Saving
money, time, and effort is the researchers' primary objective. Because they can find these
resources everywhere, the researchers found this to be accessible.

Significance of the Study

With the aid of recyclable materials, this study hopes to show students and faculty members
how to make chalk that is both affordable and simple to make. The study can reduce eggshell
waste, especially for people who enjoy eating eggs.

It can also save faculty, students, and teachers money and time by eliminating the need to
purchase chalk from stores. Additionally, this benefits public schools since they lack the
resources to purchase commercial chalk. Making eggshalk encourages young people to use
their imaginations and spend quality time with their parents.

By simply following the instructions on how to build an eggshalk, people who cannot purchase
commercial chalks can benefit from the project by starting their own business. Additionally, an
eggshalk can assist in ensuring the safety of the chalk.

Definition of Terms

Chalk. It is the dependent variable, and the expected result in our research.

Eggshells. It is the main ingredients in our research.
