✓Psychological testing- the process of administering research-validated clinical

tests that were designed to provide additional information about the psychological

functioning and personality characteristics of an individual.

Generally, more than 1 test is used to get concrete results.

✓ Psycho-diagnostic testing : a specialized
diagnostic procedure that identifies and quantifies
degrees of psychopathology.
• It uses
➢ written,
➢ oral and
➢ projective instruments
• to evaluate a patient's mental processes and to
assess how their thinking and emotions are likely
to impact their behavior.

• Psycho-diagnostic testing provides:

➢ Objective data on a patient's psychological functioning
➢ And it is a useful tool for clarifying confusing clinical
presentations.
• Is there any difference between Psychometrics
and clinical conducting Psychological
assessment?
✓Assessment: the process of
➢Integrating the raw results from all the tests administered,
➢Synthesizing these results, and
➢Providing an integrated interpretation of their meaning, (results,
and the potential limitations of each test).

• The assessment process can contribute to the therapy process,

primarily in two ways:
• It can provide diagnostic clarification where the nature of the
problem and course of action seem unclear.
• It can immeasurably aid the treatment planning process and
shorten the time necessary for treatment, or get treatment back
on track when it's not working.
The Role of the clinician
➢An expert in human behavior

➢Who must deal with complex processes and understand test scores in the context of a person’s
life.

➢Must have knowledge concerning problem areas and, on the basis of this knowledge, form a
general idea regarding behaviors to observe and areas in which to collect relevant data.

➢This involves an awareness and appreciation of multiple causation, interactional influences, and
multiple relationships.
The Role of the clinician
➢Should have basic knowledge related to

✓The demands,

✓Types of referral questions, and

✓Expectations of various contexts—particularly

– Employment,

– Education,

– Vocational /career,

– Health care (psychological, psychiatric, medical),&

– Forensic.

The Role of the clinician
➢ Furthermore, clinicians should know the main interpretive
hypotheses in psychological testing and be able to identify, sift
through, and evaluate a series of hypotheses to determine which
are most relevant and accurate.

➢ For each assessment device, clinicians must understand

conceptually what they are trying to test.

➢ Clinicians should also have in-depth operational criteria’s for them.
