Plants are very important to people and animals. They
have many uses. Plants provide us many things that we need
like: food, medicine, building materials and others. Most of
our plants are grown for food. Plants are great sources of
food. Plants are also used for decoration and beautification.

*Plants as Source of Oxygen and Food

Plants can make their own
food because of the green
coloring pigment called
chlorophyll present in their leaves.
Plants need sunlight, water and
carbon dioxide to make food. As
plants make food, they release
oxygen, which we breathe in.
Without food and oxygen, people
and animals cannot live.

Plant parts that can be eaten are the leaves, stem, roots,
and fruits. Some examples of foods that come from plants
are rice, carrot, squash, banana, papaya and kangkong.

*Plants as Source of Clothing Materials
Many plants provides us with materials for the
manufacture of clothes and other fabrics. Leaves and stems
of plants contain fibers called cellulose. These are used to
make cloth, paper, shoes and bags. Examples include
pineapple, ramie and cotton.

Banana and abaca are used to make rope, sack and

barong. Water lily and other grasses are used to make
footwear.

*Plants as Source of Building Materials
Big trees like narra, ipil-ipil, coconut and mahogany
provide lumber or wood for use in the construction of offices,
homes, schools and buildings.
