Laboratory Equipment and Materials

Lab.1
Lab. Equipment:

1. Microscope
Simple
Compound
Electron
2. Incubator
• Is a device used to grow and maintain
microbiological culture .

• The incubator maintain optimal temperature,

humidity and other conditions such as the carbon
dioxide (CO2) and oxygen content of the
atmosphere inside.

• The temperature of incubator is constantly

maintained at 37°C.
3. Autoclave (Moist Sterilization)
• An autoclave is a pressure chamber used to sterilize equipment and supplies
by subjecting them to high pressure saturated steam at 121°C for around 15-
20 minutes depending on the size of the loads and contents.

• Used to sterilize culture media, discard and other equipment.

• All microorganisms and their endospores are killed within 15 minutes .

Autoclave
4. Oven (Dry sterilization)
• Oven uses dry heat to sterilization.

• Used to sterilize items that might be

damaged by moist heat ( e.g. glasswares,
powders and oils)

• The temperature is about 150-180 °C for

1-2 hr.
5. Laboratory refrigerator
Is used for a wide variety of purposes such as:

1. Maintenance and storage of stock culture

between subculturing periods.

2. Storage of sterile media to prevent

dehydration.

3. Also used as repository for thermolabile

solution, antibiotics and serums.
6. Centrifuge
Is an apparatus that rotates at high speed and separate substances of
different densities.
7. Balance
Used to measure an object´s mass to a very high degree of
precision.
8. Hot plate / Stir plate
9. Water bath
10. Biological Safety Cabinet
Is an enclosed, ventilated laboratory workspaces
for safely working with materials contaminated
with pathogens .
11. Bunsen burner
Is a common piece of lab. equipment that produce a single open gas
flame, which is used for heating and sterilization.
12. Inoculating loops and needles
Inoculating loops are used to transfer microorganisms to growth media
or for staining slides.

Inoculating needles are straight wires used to pick up bacteria

from closely packed colonies or to inoculate in a very defined area
Inoculating loops and needles
13. Anaerobic jar
Lab. Materials :

1.Glass slide: used to place specimen on to observe under the microscope.

2. Cover slip (cover slide): used to cover specimen on a microscope slide.

3. Petri dishes : often used to make agar plate for microbiological
studies .
The dish is partially filled with warm liquid containing agar and a mixture of
specific ingredients that may include :
4. Pipet and graduated cylinders

• Glass or plastic
• Used to measure liquid volume .
• Graduated in ml.
5. Beaker
6. Flask
7. Funnel
8. Test tube : used to mix, heat or store substances.

9. Test tube rack: used to hold test tube

10. Wash bottles :
Used to supply precise and small quantities
Of various liquids

11. Filter paper: special paper used to

separate solids from liquids
