Wire & Cable Definitions

• Standard - The written minimum requirements by which a product, service or process is


evaluated.

• National Electrical Code (NFPA70) (NEC) – US electric code published by NFPA that
specifies electrical installation requirements.

• Canadian Electrical Code (CEC) – Canadian electric code that specifies electrical
installation requirements. The Code is produced by a large body of volunteers from
industry and various levels of government

• Listing Service - A service whereby UL determines that a manufacturer has


demonstrated the ability to produce a product that complies with UL's requirements with
respect to reasonably foreseeable risks associated with the product. As part of the
service, UL authorizes the manufacturer to use the UL Listing Mark on products that
comply with UL's requirements and establishes Follow-Up Service conducted by UL as a
check of the means the manufacturer exercises to determine compliance with UL's
requirements.
• Verification – UL Mark Program/Service for Products tested to national or international
performance standards. This service is similar to UL’s Classification Service.
Certification and Follow0Up Services as well as Letter Report Services are both
available.
Wire & Cable Definitions
• Outline of Investigation - A published document that contains UL's requirements that are used to
certify a product when a published Standard is not available (For example, Outline of Investigation
for Cables for Network -Powered Broadband Communications Systems, Subject 2261).

• Standards Bulletin - A document containing proposals for issuance or revision of a UL Standard for
Safety that is distributed for review and comment.
