Identify and underline the stated topic sentences of the following paragraphs.

1. Most of the songbirds in our country migrate from the North to South in fall. Sometimes you can see them flying in
great flocks. They go to the South where they can find bugs, worms, and berries. Some birds migrate as far as South
America. In spring, they fly back to the North.
2. A few animals change the color of their coats. The snowshoe rabbit has a grayish- brown coat in spring and summer. In
late fall, gets a new coat of white fur. Other animals that change their brown summer coats to white winter coats are the
weasel and the arctic fox.

3. Some animals, such as the elk, live together in a group called a herd. The elk herd usually has a leader. He is the most
powerful animal in the herd or the best fighter. The leader leads the herd from one feeding ground to another. While most
of the herd graze, some animals keep watch for enemies.

4. The African antelope is helped by a little brown bird. The bird climbs all over the antelope and eats the insects that bite
his skin. The crocodile also has a bird helper. When the crocodile opens his huge mouth, a little bird will hop in and eat
the leeches that he finds there.

5. Henry’s greatest hope was to buy a bicycle. He tried to make money by selling bubble gum and other things, but he got
into trouble. Then the bicycle he got at an auction turned out to be just junk. At last Beezus, a girl who lived in the next
block, helped him earn some money.
