Why mandatory ROTC should be abolished?

Our Vice President, Sara Duterte, and President Bong Bong Marcos are planning to make ROTC
mandatory for senior high school students. This is because they believe that this can help to motivate, train,
organize, and mobilize the students for national defense preparedness, including disaster preparedness
and capacity building for risk-related situations. However, I believe that this mandatory ROTC should be
abolished because it will add an unnecessary burden to students and parents, can lead to discrimination
and sexism against gays, and because we can motivate or train ourselves without the help of ROTC.
The first reason why mandatory ROTC should be abolished is that it will add an unnecessary
burden to students and parents. Joining this Mandatory ROTC can prolong the studies of our students
because they need to focus on training for 2 years or more. Moreover, our passion to graduate early, get a
good job, and help our parents might be interrupted because of the mandatory ROTC training our leaders
are planning.
Another reason is that it can cause outright discrimination and sexism among gays. There is a
possibility that many gays could experience discrimination because of their gender and actions. Gays may
also experience being harassed during training because of the ROTC's excessive machismo and anti-gay
character. They will suffer because of the words that people might throw at them and may cause them
trauma.
The last reason why mandatory ROTC should be abolished is that we can motivate and train
ourselves at home or in school. Motivation and training ourselves doesn't need a mandatory ROTC just for
us to know about it. Motivating and training ourselves can also be done at home with the help of our
parents. It can also be done in school with the help of our good teachers. We can get a good quality of
education and a disciplined manner coming from home and school.
Finally, before applying or planning to do the mandatory ROTC, our leaders should consider the
disadvantages for students and parents. It is better if they focus more on how to improve our education
quality than on doing this. This is their time to listen to the voices of their people and show us how they will
make good decisions for our country that will benefit not only them but also the people they are serving.
