TOPIC: NUTRITION IN PLANTS (notes)
Write down the following question and answers in your
c/w neatly.
ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS IN BREIF:
1. What is nutrition?
a) The process of intake of food and its proper utilisation
in the body is termed as nutrition.
2. Differentiate between autotrophs and heterotrophs.
a)
Autotrophs Heterotrophs
They are called producers. They are called consumers.
Auto=self trophic=to feed. Hetero=another trophic=to feed
They prepare their own food using They cannot prepare their own food
raw materials carbondioxide, water, using raw materials.
sunlight.
This process is called They cannot undergo
photosynthesis. photosynthesis.
Eg: Green Plants Eg: Animals

3. What are the raw materials required for photosynthesis,

and from where they are obtained?
a) Raw materials required for photosynthesis are:
Carbondioxide, water and sunlight (solar energy).
*The leaves of plants contain chlorophyll.
*This pigment traps the solar energy.
*Plants take in carbondioxide from the surrounding air.
*Water and minerals are absorbed by the roots and
transported to the site of photosynthesis.
4) Why should we destarch of a leaf before conducting an
experiment to show that light is necessary for
photosynthesis?
a) Starch is produced by the process of photosynthesis in the
presence of light and starch acts as an indicator.
*Removing the starch which is already present in the leaf
help us to understand that formation of starch takes place in
presence of light and it is necessary for photosynthesis.
5) How are partially parasitic plants different from other
parasitic plants?
A) Total/ complete parasitic plants: They depend fully on
their host for growth and survival.
Eg: Cuscuta and Rafflesia.
Parital parasitic plants: They depend partially on host to
obtain water and nutrients.
Eg: Mistletoe.
6) What are saprophytes? Give examples.
a) Saprophytes: The organisms which derive its nutrients
from the dead and decaying organic matter are called
saprophytes.
Such type of nutrition is called saprophytic nutrition.
Eg: Mushrooms and breadmould.
7) Cuscuta plants cannot perform photosynthesis. How do
they obtain their nutrition?
a) Cuscuta is a hetrotrophic plant which has parasitic mode of
nutrition.
*It obtains its nutrition by twinning over the host and
absorbs its nutrients using certain special roots.
8) Deep in the ocean, sunlight can hardly reach, yet plants
such as brown and red algae are found here. How do you
think they are able to synthesis their food?
a) Red green algae do photosynthesis just like green algae
and plants, but except a range of light they absorb is different
from that of green plants
Some have special adaption to low light and can undergo
photosynthesis.
9) Can plants use an artificial source of light (example tube
light) for preparing food?
a) Yes plants can use artificial source of light to perform the
process of photosynthesis.
Sunlight is the ultimate source of energy but it’s never stated
that plants won’t perform photosynthesis in the absence of
sunlight (rate of photosynthesis may vary depending on the
intensity of light).
Artificial lights can also help to prepare food.
