is also investing heavily in brand-
new aircraft, breaking with a tradition
that has seen it opt for older Airbus
examples. In January 2022, the airline
announced a $5.5 billion deal to
purchase up to 50 Boeing 737 MAXs,
which it said would result in savings
through lower operating costs. It is
likely that the carrier will have been able
to negotiate a discount due to the well-
documented difficulties the OEM has
had with the narrowbody aircraft.

The CEO is the first to admit Air Astana
– which celebrated its 20th anniversary
during 2022 – has been aided somewhat
by wider events: “Some of our regional
rivals, and partners, have had their wings
clipped in recent months so that’s left
the field wide open for us but, to use
footballing parlance, we can only play
the opposition in front of us.”
Speaking exclusively to Airliner World,
Foster remarked: “The awards say a lot
about us and reflects the fact we’ve
taken on a very central role in the
former Soviet Union space. To add

making it as easy as possible to negotiate
the differing COVID restrictions. It was
challenging.
“In 2020, we made significant losses
because much of our fleet wasn’t flying,
but we still had to pay lease fees and
salaries, so we became much leaner,
more efficient and more reactive, able to
move quickly to
take advantage of new opportunities.”
Foster added: “COVID-19 helped us
reset. We didn’t need any government
intervention, subsidies or shareholder
injections so we weren’t tied down by
the kinds of restrictions of other carriers.
This enabled us to expand unfettered,
and we’ve now had almost two years of
very strong growth.”
This flexible approach meant by the
time of the Ukraine invasion in early
2022, Air Astana could respond at pace.
Russia was once pivotal to the carrier’s
operations – as a former Soviet state,
Kazakhstan retains close ties with
Moscow and, during its heyday, services
across the border accounted for 12-13%
of the airline’s total traffic. This fell to
zero during the pandemic, but was
on the rise once again when western
sanctions were imposed and Russian
airspace effectively closed.
The CEO reflected: “Moving out of
Russia was a great deal less damaging
to us than if it had happened four years
ago. It could have been a serious blow,
but thankfully we were quickly able to
redeploy this capacity to Turkey, Georgia
and the Far East, which is opening up
again, along with London and Frankfurt.”
Given the strength of performance
elsewhere in the network, Foster hinted
Air Astana would not rush to restore
capacity to Russia if restrictions are lifted.
Challenging times
It hasn’t all been blue skies and tailwinds
for the airline. Though it has reinstated
most of its services to western Europe,
including London/Heathrow, Frankfurt
and Amsterdam, it was caught up in the
staffing shortages that hampered airport
operations over the summer.
“They were shambolic,” Foster
exclaimed. “Some of the statistics from

Beyond Kazakhstan
The Air Astana Group has transformed
almost beyond recognition over the
last three years, but it remains a work
in progress. Is the carrier chasing the

In short, no. “It’s not one of our key

“We want to be the best airline in the

can be, but frankly we’re not here just to

easyJet recently unveiled its net-zero
roadmap until 2050 and said that
78% of emissions are covered by new
technology aircraft, SAF and operational
improvements, with the remaining 22%
to be reduced by carbon capture. In

However, the dearth of SAF availability
(just 0.1% of all fuel was SAF last year)
has been a topic of much debate
at recent IATA meetings as well as
the ICAO Assembly held in October,
which embraced the goal to speed up
production. Through United’s Eco-Skies
Alliance, corporate partners funded 7.1
million gallons of SAF in 2021, despite
the fuel being two to four times more
expensive than conventional Jet A
fuel. Riley argues that while the overall
numbers may still be relatively modest,
things are moving in the right direction:
“Just three years ago, nobody was
talking about SAF. Now, we talk about it
in the boardroom, with the media, with
corporate partners and our investors.”

Today, United uses five million gals of
