INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT

CHAPTER 3

1. A curtain of length 150m is cut into pieces in such a way that the length of each piece
follows the arithmetic progression. If the length of the shortest and the longest pieces
are 0.2m and 1m respectively, find how many pieces can be made out. [4m] C3 CL03

2.
a) The first term of an arithmetic series is 7 and its 𝑛𝑡ℎ term is 127. The sum of the first n
terms of the arithmetic series is 2077. Calculate the value of n and the thirteenth term of the
series.

b) The second term and the fifth term of a geometric series are 5 and respectively. Find
the difference between the seventh term and the eighth term.

b) Three families P, Q and R went for a buffet dinner at a restaurant which has separate
charges for children, adults and senior citizens. Family P spent RM296 for 8 children, 4 adults
and 2 senior citizens. Family Q spent RM456 for 3 children, 9 adults and 3 senior citizens.
Family R spent RM84 for 2 children, 1 adult and 1 senior citizen.

i) If the charges for 1 child, 1 adult and 1 senior citizen are RMx, RM yand RM
zrespectively, express the system of linear equations based on the above
information in the form of 𝑆𝑋 = 𝐵

4) A sum of RM60000 is to be invested in a stock mutual fund, a bond mutual fund and a
money market fund. The expected annual returns for these funds are 12%, 8% and 5% per
annum respectively. The total annual return is RM5400. A financial planner recommends
that you invest the same amount in stock as in bonds and the money market combined. Let
x, y and z represent the sum invested in a stock mutual fund, a bond mutual fund and a
money market fund respectively.

a) Form a system of linear equations in the form of matrix equation, 𝐴𝑋 = 𝐵 where A is

the coefficient matrix, X is the variable matrix and Bis the constant matrix.
