Magnesium is a metal and has two outer electrons, as it is found in group 2. Oxygen is a non-
metal and has 6 outer electrons, as it is found in group 6. The two electrons from a magnesium
atom transfer to the outer shell of the oxygen atom and both now have full outer shells. The
magnesium atom is now a positively charged ion (cation) with the charge 2+, as it lost two
electrons. The oxygen atom is now a negatively charged ion (anion) with the charge 2-, as it
gained two electrons.

d. Draw how magnesium and oxygen join to form an ionic bond.
