Abstract: The coastal upwelling, which plays a very important role in hydrodynamic processes
in general and marine ecosystems in particular, has been widely studied globally because
upwelling has a significant influence on biological cycles and primary productivities. In the
Vietnam seawater, especially in the South Central area, upwelling appears from June to August
every year during the period of strong southwest monsoon season. Therefore, the coastal
upwelling area has been recognized in many research works and scientific papers as the strong
upwelling area with specific characteristics of oceanography not only in the region but also in the
world. On the basis of collecting literature review and updating the newest research results on the
phenomenon of strong Vietnam coastal upwelling, thereby re-systematizing and highlighting the
causes and mechanisms of each region on different in spatial and temporal scales, besides
emphasizing the scientific issues that are still open, should be clarified and provide research
orientations in the future.
