The Historical Heroes Of Telangana- Arutla Kamala Devi

Today, Telangana has become a developed state with many facilities, good education and
many job opportunities. But we have not got this automatically. There had been a lot of
struggles and sacrifices because of which today we are able to live a peaceful life. There had
been many freedom fighters who had fought for the freedom we are enjoying today. One
among them is the prominent figure and activist Arutla Kamala Devi. She played a dominant
role in Telangana Armed Rebellion, based in Aleru region of Nalgonda. She was born in
1920 to Laxmi Narasamma and Venkat Ram Reddy. Because of the norms, she was not
allowed to pursue her education and got married to Arutla Rama Chandra Reddy. Both of
them were pioneers and led the movement against the RAZAKARS of Qasim Razvi, who
supported the rule of Nizam Osman Ali Khan. It was a time when Indian Union got
independence. But, Hyderabad was still under the control of hereditary prince. Ram Chandra
Reddy encouraged Kamala Devi to pursue her higher education. After the completion of
education, she worked as a teacher in the secret school for women with her husband. The
construction of schools and colleges was prohibited in Hyderabad then. When the
RAZAKARS got to know about the activities of education, they called out for shut down.
Then the Jain Society offered place for school. The darkest hours of Telangana history
allowed Kamala Devi to become the member of Andra Maha Saba, an affiliate of Communist
Party.

She fought for the rights of women in Hyderabad state. Due to Marshal Law that was
imposed in 1944, the militants of Telangana Armed Rebellion had to go underground. She
was an active militant leader in the forest lands of Challuru. The couple got arrested by the
police , working for Nizam and were moved to Secunderabad Prison in 1948, before the
merge of Hyderabad with independent India and was released only after 1951. Arutla Kamala
Devi got elected as a Member of Legislative Assembly of Hyderabad state in 1952. She also
continued as the Member of Legislative Assembly of newly formed Andhra Pradesh. In the
year 1962, Communist Party became the main opposition party in the state. But after the split
of Communist Party in 1964, she was elected as the leader of opposition and consequently
“the first woman opposition leader of India.”

Through out her life, she was true to the spirit of resistance and ideology. She was awarded
honorary doctorate by Kakatiya University. This woman who always dreamed of equal
society left the world on 1st January,2001. As we have witnessed a lot of struggle behind our
freedom, we should behave in a responsible manner and make Telangana to be known all
over the world. Nowadays, every girl is getting good education and job opportunities because
of the leaders like Arutla Kamala Devi to whom every one of us should be grateful.
