34
e) Explain how you believe the emotional strengths you have identified above help your
workplace performance and relationships.

Empathy is the ability to experience and relate to the thoughts, emotions or experience of others.
Empathy is more than simple sympathy, which is being able to understand and support others with
compassion or sensitivity. For me empathy helps in following ways in regard to workplace
performance and relationships:

 Empathy allows me to feel safe with my failures because I will not simply be blamed for
them.

 It encourages me to understand the root cause behind poor performance.

 Being empathetic allows me to help struggling employees improve and excel.

Empathy is essential in the workplace for any business dealing with setbacks, poor performance, or
individuals that genuinely want to achieve. As leaders, our job is to deal with our team
sympathetically and watch them construct a robust and wealthy organization.

f) Discuss how you believe your emotional weaknesses hinder your workplace performance
and relationships.

Empathy has a number of downsides, one of which is that it can lead to bad decision-making. We
may be inclined to simply address the problem for the worried employee because empathy is
frequently a large surge of feeling, but this may generate problems for other team members.

Allowing a team member who is caring for an aging parent to take as much time off as they need is
an example. This could put a lot of extra work and hours on the shoulders of the rest of the crew.
Another team member with a young child might think you are being unjust. In a fairway, you now
have extra problems to solve.

Empathy might fade away quickly as well. Even if we feel bad for a teammate who is going
through a difficult time in life, the emotion may evaporate before we can fix the problem. As a
result, we may dismiss it in the face of long commotion lists and looming deadlines. Members of
the team may come to believe that we are unconcerned.

Finally, empathy has the potential to cause burnout. Even good emotions can be exhausting.
Empathizing with the entire team gets exhausting after a while, and our ability to care is harmed.
Even though we desire to be empathic, we might not be able to do so.

Empathy can also be harmful to team diversity since we tend to identify with people who are

BSBPEF502 Project Portfolio v1.1 April 2022 Page 11 of

34
similar to us. Different team members may believe they are not receiving adequate help.

g) Complete the following table about personal stressors at work. Identify from the
following list at least four sources of stress that are most likely to result in workplace
stress for you:

 Demands:

o key performance indicators

o targets

o budgets

o time-management and schedules

o meetings with senior management

o over-time

 Poor leadership:

o impatient/unfair managers

o multiple managers or supervisors

o managers that do not understand your role

 Relationships:

o bullying in the workplace

o conflicts between you and others that have not been adequately resolved

o conflicts between members of your team that you must resolve

o strained relationships with clients/suppliers/customers

 Dealing with conflict – such as angry customers

 Lack of support – from team members and/or supervision

 Lack of understanding:

o poor communications from management

o not understanding your role and responsibility

members contribute towards For many introverts, writing comes more naturally than
the team goal in an individual speaking. This is not to say that they are terrible at speaking out
capacity? their thoughts, but they are more inclined to lay out their
thoughts on paper than in speech. As they write, they have the
time to process their thoughts and make sense of what is going
on in their head. In addition, writing is slower than speaking, and

this slowness is usually what introverts thrive on.

Introverts are often misunderstood and prejudged negatively

because they prefer to shun crowds and instead feel more
comfortable enjoying their own solitude. However, if people take
a step back and try to understand introverts, many will be
pleasantly surprised at the wisdom, creativity, and talent this
particular demographic possesses. More often than not, this
manifests in great writing. Moreover, that, ultimately, is why
introverts often make great writers.

Because of these reasons team member 1 contributed a lot in an

individual capacity while writing a report.

Team member 2:

The other member was an extrovert and had great social skills.
Having a solid set of social skills allows you to communicate,
relate to, and connect with other people. This is essential for
establishing friendships and navigating your way through life
with a better degree of satisfaction.

The other person writing a report felt valued and he contributed a

lot while writing a report. The extrovert also convinced him that
he would contribute more while making presentation and
delivering presentation.

you completed together. The first step in preparing a presentation is to learn more about
the audience to whom you will be speaking. It is a good idea to
obtain some information on the backgrounds, values, and
interests of your audience so that you understand what the
audience members might expect from your presentation.

Step 2: Select a topic

34
Next, if possible select a topic that is of interest to the audience
and to you. It will be much easier to deliver a presentation that
the audience finds relevant, and more enjoyable to research a
topic that is of interest to you.

Step 3: Define the objective of the presentation

Once you have selected a topic, write the objective of the

presentation in a single concise statement. The objective needs to
specify exactly what you want your audience to learn from your
presentation. Base the objective and the level of the content on
the amount of time you have for the presentation and the
background knowledge of the audience.

Use this statement to help keep you focused as you research and
develop the presentation.

Preparing the Content of Your Presentation

Step 4: Prepare the body of the presentation

The content is based on the business report written earlier.

Step 5: Prepare the introduction and conclusion

Once you have prepared the body of the presentation, decide how
you will begin and end the talk. Make sure the introduction
captures the attention of your audience and the conclusion
summarizes and reiterates your important points. In other words,
"Tell them what you're going to tell them. Tell them. Then, tell
them what you told them."

During the opening of your presentation, it is important to attract

the audience's attention and build their interest. If you do not,
listeners will turn their attention elsewhere and you will have a
difficult time getting it back. Strategies that you can use include
the following:

Make the introduction relevant to the listeners' goals, values, and

needs

Ask questions to stimulate thinking

Share a personal experience

Begin with a joke or humorous story

Project a cartoon or colourful visual

Make a stimulating or inspirational statement

Give a unique demonstration

During the opening, you want to clearly present your topic and
the purpose of your presentation. Clearly articulating the topic
and purpose will help the listeners focus on and easily follow
your main ideas.

During the conclusion of your presentation, reinforce the main

ideas you communicated. Remember that listeners will not
remember your entire presentation, only the main ideas. By
reinforcing and reviewing the main ideas, you help the audience
remember them.

Practicing and Delivering

Step 6: Practice delivering the presentation

Most people spend hours preparing a presentation but very little

time practicing it. When you practice your presentation, you can
reduce the number of times you utter words and phrases like,
"um," "well," and "you know." These habits can easily diminish a
speaker's credibility. You can also fine-tune your content to be
sure you make your most important points in the time allotted.
