Clauses

 It is a group of words which have their own subject (the doer) and the verb (the action).
 Subject in a clause can be hidden or visible but verb should be visible.
 A clause can act as a sentence or a part of sentence.
 For example, He is a nice person. / She danced.

Relative Clause:
 Type of dependent clause.
 It works to describe a noun or pronoun in a sentence.
 It functions as an adjective in the sentence and so relative clause is also known as
adjective clause.
 For example,
1. Do you know the boy who participated in the competition?
2. I like the kid who lives next door.
3. She loves the dress that I brought yesterday.
4. This is the house which Rahul built.

Relative Clause are of two types:


 Defining Relative Clause (Restrictive / Essential)
 Non-Defining Relative Clause (Non-Restrictive / Non Essential)

Defining Relative Clauses:


o It tells us which specific person or thing we are talking about in a larger group of people
or things.
o If DRC is removed, the meaning of the sentences changes significantly.
o They tend to answer the questions: Which, what, whose.
o For example,
 The mirror that I bought yesterday is already broken.
 She is the women who gives me chocolate.

Non – Defining Clauses:


o Gives additional information about the person or thing we are talking about.
o Meaning of sentence does not change, only some information is removed.
o For example,
 Rahul’s father, who lives in Delhi, has two cars.
 My sister, who went to college, has written a song.
