MATTER IN OUR
SURROUNDING
6. A diver is able to cut through water in a swimming pool. Which property of matter does this
observation show?
Answer:The diver is able to easily cut through the water in the swimming pool because of the weak forces of
attraction between water molecules. It is this property of water that contributes to easy diving.
10. A rubber band can change its shape on stretching. Will you classify it as solid or not? Justify?
Answer: Rubber band changes shape under force and regains the shape when the force is removed. So, it is classified
as a solid.
12. What about sugar and salt? When kept in different jars these take the shape of the jar. Are they
solid?
Answer:The shape of each individual sugar or salt crystal remains fixed, whether we take it
in our hand, put it on a plate or in a jar.
17. The mass per unit volume of a substance is called density. (density=mass/volume). Arrange the
following in the order of increasing density – air, exhaust from the chimneys, honey, water, chalk,
cotton and iron.
Answer:
The following substances are arranged in the increasing density:
Air
Exhaust from chimney
Cotton
Water
Honey
Chalk
Iron
(b) (i) Rigidity: It is the property of matter to continue to remain in its shape when treated
with an external force.
(ii) Compressibility: It is the attribute of the particles to contract its intermolecular space when
exposed to an external force thereby escalating its density.
20. Liquids generally have a lower density than solids. But you must have observed that ice floats on
water. Find out why.
Answer:
In general, the volume of a liquid is more than the volume of a solid because liquid particles are more free to move,
resulting in more volume. Ice, on the other hand, has a maximum density of water at 4 degrees Celsius. Ice is lighter
than water and has a lower density. As a result, it floats on water.
22.Under what conditions gasses can be liquefied? In which form LPG is filled in a gas cylinder?
Answer:By applying pressure and reducing temperature, gasses can be liquefied. The liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is
filled in gas cylinders in the compressed gas form.
30.Define sublimation.
Answer: Sublimation is the change of gaseous state
directly to solid state without going through
liquid state.eg:Ammonium chloride, camphor
and naphthalene balls.
35.What is evaporation?
Answer: phenomenon of change of a liquid into vapors at any temperature below its boiling point is called
evaporation.
37.What is humidity?
Answer: The air holds water vapour, this air with water is called humid air and the phenomenon is called humidity.
38.Give reason to explain why it takes longer to dry wet clothes in humid weather?
AnswerRate of evaporation depends on humidity present in air. Humid air already has a large amount of water
vapours, so the rate of evaporation is slow.
40.Why do we see water droplets collected on the outer surface of a glass container, containing ice?
Answer: The water vapour present in air, comes in contact with the cold outer surface of the container
thereby condensing it to form water droplets.
42.Why do people sprinkle water on the roof after a hot sunny day?
Answer:After a hot sunny day, people sprinkle water on the roof or open ground because the large latent heat of
vaporisation of water helps to cool the surface. Water takes away the heat from the ground and gives a cooling effect.
43.How does the water kept in an earthen pot (matka) become cool during summer?
Answer:An earthen pot is porous in nature. These tiny pores facilitate penetration of water and hence their
evaporation from the pot surface. The process of evaporation requires energy which is contributed by water in the pot
as a result of which water turns cooler.
44.Why does our palm feel cold when we put on some acetone or petrol or perfume on it?
Answer:Acetone, petrol, and perfume are volatile substances that get evaporated when they come in contact
with air. Evaporation is facilitated as it uses energy from palm hence leaving a cooling effect on our
45.Why are we able to sip hot tea or milk faster from a saucer rather than a cup?
Answer:A saucer has a larger surface area than a cup which promotes quicker evaporation hence the tea or milk in a
saucer cools down faster.
47.Explain why solids have fixed shape but liquids and gasses do not have fixed shape.
Answer: Solids have fixed shape due to strong intermolecular force of attraction between them. The liquids
and gases have molecules with less intermolecular force of attraction and hence they can flow and take shape
of the container.
EVAPORATION BOILING
Evaporation is a normal process that occurs when the Boiling is an unnatural process where the
liquid form changes into the gaseous form; while liquid gets heated up and vaporized due to
causing an increase in the pressure or temperature. continuous heating of the liquid.
Bubbling effect is not visible in evaporation. Bubbling effect is visible during the
process of boiling.
The process of evaporation is usually slower and more The process of boiling is usually much

rapidly as well.
