The Islamabad High Court allowed two writ petitions challenging the postponement of local government elections in Islamabad that were scheduled for December 31, 2022. The Court set aside the Election Commission of Pakistan's order dated December 27, 2022 postponing the elections as well as the related notification dated December 19, 2022. The Election Commission of Pakistan was directed to hold the local government elections in Islamabad as per the previously announced schedule of December 31, 2022. The Federal Government was also directed to provide all necessary assistance to the Election Commission to conduct the elections as mandated by the Constitution.

ARBAB MUHAMMAD TAHIR, J.- For reasons to be
recorded separately, both the writ petitions are allowed. Consequently, the impugned order dated 27.12.2022 and the impugned notification dated 19.12.2022 are set-aside. The Election Commission of Pakistan is directed to hold the local government elections in the Islamabad Capital Territory as per the schedule already announced i.e. on 31.12.2022. The Federal Government is directed to provide all the assistance to the Election Commission of Pakistan for conducting the local bodies’ elections as mandated by the Constitution.
