Ecological Systems With Mr.

This is mainly an introductory biology class that will used to prepare you for next years HSA biology class. We will be covering a lot of biology that is not addressed in detail in the HSA class. We will also be focusing on experimental design, cells, DNA, genetics, evolution, and ecology. Course Materials 1. A 3-ring binder that will serve as your notebook for the class 2. Vocabulary Notebook (this will be kept in class) 3. Pencil or Pen Classroom Rules 1. Be Prepared Bring all required items to class everyday 2. Be on time You should be in class, in your seat and starting the warm-up by the time the bell rings 3. Be respectful Appropriate behavior towards me, other students, and class materials are required 4. Be careful Follow all safety precautions when in the classroom and during lab activities Grading Policy: The course grade will be determined as follows: Tests: 30% Quizzes: 20% Classwork/Notebook: 20% Homework: 20% Current Events: 10% The course grade will be determined as follows: 1st term 40% 2nd term 40% Final 20% Grading Scale: 100-90 A 89-80 B 79-70 C 69-60 C 59-Below E

This includes any type of listening devices and cell phones. If seen appropriate consequences will be given. Hall Pass: You may not leave class without your planner (hall pass). You will be

allowed 6 passes out of class per semester. Consequences: You are expected to meet all classroom expectations. This includes; being on time, appropriate language, talking only when called upon, and participation in class work. Failure to do so will result in the following consequences. 1. Warning and relocation of seat 2. Second warning and phone call home 3. Third warning and phone call home 4. Afterschool detention (failure to attend will result in 2 referrals) 5. Referral Vocabulary Notebooks: You will be given a notebook to keep in class on the first day (these notebooks must be returned at the end of the semester, so do not damage them). The notebooks will be collected at the end of every unit (test day) and included in the class work grade. The notebooks will be used to keep track of the information in class and will serve as excellent study guide. They will be divided into 4 sections: 1. Warm-ups and summary: A short warm-up and summary will be given at the beginning and end of every class. It is expected that the students copy down the question and the answer. These questions will serve as a study guide for the HSA. 2. Vocabulary: Students will be expected to write down all vocabulary words posted in the room and their definitions. 3. Essential Question: Each week there will be an essential question given regarding the topic at hand. The students are expected to copy down the question and write a 4-5 sentence answer to the question using information gathered in class. 4. Class work: Items specified by the teacher given throughout the year will be required to be in this section. (mainly notes) Homework: There will be homework due every Friday. Homework is meant to be individually and will be collected at the beginning of the class. Current Events: There will be current events due every other week for a total of 10 throughout the year. Current event format will be given and explained on one of the first days of class. Current events can come from approved Internet sources, newspaper, or science magazines. Students can use my website for approved sources. Quizzes and Tests: There will be quizzes and vocabulary quizzes given every week during the course. Quizzes are meant to be a practice for the test. You may retake quizzes once. Five tests will be given throughout the class. Tests cannot be retaken; however, test corrections can be made. When correcting a test the student will need to provide an explanation for why their previous answer was wrong and why the new one is correct. credit will be given back towards the test grade for each question corrected.
