In total, 46 primary and 11 secondary schools have been closed across the province in the last fve years. UUP mLA David mcNarry described the statistics as shocking and said he wanted reassurance that government policy was not impacting adversely on controlled schools. And there are fears that the crisis could escalate further unless governments are able to convince fnancial markets that they are able to pay off their loans. Prime minister David cameron last night spoke to his German counterpart, Angela merkel, about the instability and is in close contact with chancellor George osborne. michael Hewson, a market analyst at cmc markets, warned: this crisis will run and run, and could make Lehmans look like a tupperware party. Locally, Ulster Bank announced a loss of 566m in the frst six months of this year, due to write- offs of bad property loans. However, a top academic has said that Northern Ireland has two key advantages over many other european regions the weak pound and strong likelihood that the province will be allowed to cut corporation tax. He spoke to Farming Life while attending this weeks Fermanagh Show. There is an absolute necessity for the farming industry to debate how it best responds to the CAP Reform proposals, which will be published in the autumn, he added. And the union will be to the fore in bringing this about. However, priority number one remains that of ensuring that the largest possible budget is secured for agriculture moving forward, he added. Up to this point we have received a strong indication from Whitehall that Northern Ireland will secure the same proportion of the UK budget as was agreed post the Fischler reforms. We already know that food security will be a key plank of the European Commissions forthcoming CAP proposals. The worlds population is set to increase dramatically over the next decades. Countries such as China and India will become more dependent on food imports. Here in Northern Ireland we export 80% of the food we produce. So its important for local farmers to be given the opportunity of producing accordingly. Mr Thompson went on to point out that our local agri-food sectors had the potential to generate many new jobs and signifcant wealth creation opportunities for the economy as a whole. The Executive at Stormont must, therefore, act to ensure that all future export opportunities can be availed of in full. We do not need excessive red tape! he stressed. Every effort must also be made to ensure that the wholesomeness and quality of our food are BY RICHARD HALLERON 33 Farming Life, Saturday, August 6, 2011 www.farminglife.co.uk Fermanagh Show Princess Joanne Campbell from Kesh YFC is pictured at the County Fermanagh Show on Wednesday PICTURES Steven McAuley/ Kevin McAuley Photography Multimedia Gemma Dickson, Emma Cutler and Ashleigh Dickson at the County Fermanagh Show Brandon McGrinder with his award winning Texel Katrina Taylor with her Champion Jersey Fermanagh Show supplement inside Texel open night PAGES 28 - 29 Saturday, August 6, 2011 Ellie McLean, Bushmills, is looking forward to next weeks Holstein NI Causeway Classic III which takes place at the Pedigree Sales Arena, Moira on Wednesday, August 10 at 7pm PICTuRE: Steven McAuley/ Kevin McAuley Photography/ Multimedia Continued on page three UP to 70 jobs could be lost at translink, regional development minister Danny kennedy was warned on his frst day in the job.
