Abstract
Sports play a significant role in the culture and society of India. They are not only a source of
entertainment and leisure, but also a means of promoting physical fitness and health. In addition, sports
can also serve as a vehicle for promoting national pride and unity. India has a long and rich history of
participating in sports, both at the national and international level. The country has made significant
contributions to the Olympic Games, with athletes from India winning medals in various sports such as
field hockey, boxing, wrestling, and shooting.

However, despite the importance of sports in India, the country has lagged behind in terms of
infrastructure and facilities for sports. Many sports facilities in the country are outdated and not up to
international standards, which has hindered the development and performance of Indian athletes.

In order to improve the state of sports in India and ensure that the country is able to compete at
the highest level, it is important for the government and private organizations to invest in the
development of modern sports infrastructure. This includes the construction of new sporting facilities;
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. With the aim of hosting the Olympics
games in the year 2036. The aim involves constructing world class sports infrastructure. Which brings
the proposal of building a centre of excellence in developed cities, like Surat. Along with sporting
facilities, other buildings such as hotels, commercial areas, and a residential village for athletes will be
built as well.

By investing in sports infrastructure, India can not only improve the performance of its athletes,
but also promote sports as a healthy and positive activity for all members of society. This, in turn, can
contribute to the overall well-being and development of the country.

1 INTRODUCTION
This chapter presents the background for the review. To explain the specific context and focal
point of the review, the problem description is then expressed followed by the design.

1.1 Background

Sports play an important role in Indian culture and society, and are an integral part of the country's
identity. Many Indians are passionate about sports, and participate in a variety of sports at the amateur
and professional level. Cricket is especially popular in India, and the national team has a large following.
Other popular sports in India include football, hockey, badminton, and kabaddi. The Indian Olympic
Association (IOA) is the national Olympic committee responsible for representing India at the Olympic
Games and promoting the development of sports in the country. The IOA has been working to improve
the infrastructure and facilities for sports in India, including building new stadiums and training centres.
However, there is still a need for more investment in sports infrastructure in India, especially for
facilities that can host Olympic-level events.

Investment in sports infrastructure is important for several reasons. It can provide opportunities
for athletes to train and compete at the highest level, and can also increase the popularity and
accessibility of sports for people of all ages. In addition, hosting major sports events can have a positive
economic impact, as it can bring in tourists and generate revenue for the local community. Overall, the
importance of sports in India and the need for improved Olympic-level infrastructure highlight the need
for continued investment in the development of sports in the country.

The design thesis for a centre of excellence in several cities in Gujarat would likely focus on
creating a facility that meets the needs of the international standard of games and training, while
also taking into account the local climate, culture, and infrastructure. Some potential topics that
could be addressed in a design thesis for a Centre for excellence in sports in Surat might include:

Sustainability: Given the size and scale of the International Games, it is important to consider the
environmental impact of the stadium and its associated infrastructure. This could include designing the
stadium to be as energy-efficient as possible, using locally sourced materials, and incorporating features
such as solar panels and rainwater harvesting.

Accessibility: The stadium should be designed to be accessible to people with disabilities, as well
as to a diverse range of visitors from different parts of the country. This could include designing
accessible seating, walkways, and restrooms, as well as providing adequate signage and wayfinding.

Cultural context: The design of the stadium should consider the local culture and context, and
should aim to be a meaningful and iconic addition to the surrounding area. This could involve
incorporating traditional design elements or materials, or referencing local history or landmarks in the
design.

Functionality: The stadium should be designed to meet the specific needs of the Games, including
providing adequate seating and amenities for spectators, as well as accommodating the needs of athletes
and support staff. This could involve designing flexible spaces that can be used for a variety of sports
and events, as well as incorporating state-of-the-art technology and systems to support the smooth
operation of the games.

Infrastructure and transportation: The design of the facility should take into account the existing
infrastructure and transportation networks in the area, and should aim to minimize the impact on the
local community and environment. This could involve designing the stadium to be easily accessible by
public transportation, or incorporating features such as bike-sharing stations and electric vehicle
charging stations.

1.2 Aim

The aim of a design thesis focused on designing a centre for excellence, a sports infrastructure to
create a comprehensive and functional facility that meets the needs of athletes and supports the
development of sports in India.

1.3 Objectives

1. To understand requirements for the Olympic level sports infrastructure and design a new
sports centre that meets the needs of athletes, officials, and the local community while
minimizing environmental impacts.
2. To design a centre of excellence that is adaptable for multiple sports and events, and can
be used for other purposes after the games.
3. To explore ways to reuse and repurpose existing infrastructure for the international level
Games, in order to minimize the environmental impact of new construction.
4. To design a comprehensive security plan for the Games that ensures the safety of all
participants and attendees.

1.4 Scope and Limitations

1. To consider the environmental impacts of the infrastructure projects, including the

materials used, the energy required for construction and operation, and the long-term
sustainability of the designs.
2. Ensuring the safety and security of all participants and attendees is a key consideration
for sports infrastructure projects.
3. It is important to consider the needs of all users, including athletes, officials, spectators,
and the local community, and to design infrastructure that is accessible to people with
disabilities.
4. Lack of relevant case studies in India, due to the lack of the similar scale infrastructure
in India.
5. Business model understanding could also be difficult to incorporate due to the substantial
scale of proposal.

1.5 Research Question:

What impact can an architect make on a project with involves a massive carbon footprint?

2 RESEARCH FRAMEWORK
Designing an sports centre is a complex and multifaceted task that requires careful planning and
consideration of a wide range of factors. Here is a general overview of the process:

1. Determine the location and size of the stadium: The location of the stadium should be
carefully chosen to ensure that it is easily accessible and has the necessary infrastructure
and support services in place. The size of the stadium will depend on the number of sports
and events that will be held there, as well as the expected number of attendees.
2. Develop a design concept: The design concept for the stadium should take into account
the specific needs of the sports and events that will be held there, as well as the local
climate and cultural context. The design should also consider issues such as
sustainability, accessibility, and functionality.
3. Create a detailed design: Based on the design concept, a detailed design should be created
that includes plans, elevations, and sections of the stadium, as well as detailed
specifications for materials, systems, and construction methods.
4. Obtain necessary approvals and permits: Before construction can begin, the design of the
stadium must be approved by the relevant authorities and any necessary permits must be
obtained.
5. Construction: The construction of the stadium should be carefully planned and managed
to ensure that it is completed on time and within budget.
