1. What is the difference between an artist and an artisan? Cite proof/examples from the
discussion

An artist is someone who produces art like painting (painter, an artist who paints) and music
(musician a artist who plays music). Their artworks are creative reflection and expression of art itself. On
the other hand, artisans are the person who are skilled in crafting things. Examples of their products are
jewelries and furnitures. Then sole difference between the two is that an artisan is a person who creates
a product with a functional value while an artist’s product does not cater functional values.

2. What do you think is the role of the artist in the 21st century society?

As the world changes, art also evolves. I think that the role of the artists in the 21 st century is to
resonate the happenings and new trends of the current society we live in. Because materials and means
are constantly upgrading, the artworks also do. There is an emergence of digital technologies that lead the
twists in the artwork of today. The artists use these new means in order to execute their masterpiece. The
role of the artist today is to transcend the world by creating and recreating realistic as well as aesthetic
artworks.

3. How relevant still are the awards National Artists and GAMABA, not only to the art world,
but also to the Filipino society as a whole?

Awards like National Artists and GAMABA are still relevant even up to now because these
recognitions give credit to the Filipino artists who have excelled in the world of art. Awards like these
encourages and inspires the Filipino artists as well as aspiring artists in the society to do more and be
more. These recognitions also give value to the excellence and contributions of the Filipino artists. More
than that, these awards promote the artworks of the Filipinos particularly those that contributed to the
transcendence of our cultural heritage in order to preserve our national cultural identity as well as to the
Filipino artists who transcends art in the classical world.

4. Research on at least five National Artists and GAMABA awardees (each) and their
contribution to the art world.
GAMABA Awardees

• Alonzo Saclag is a musician and dancer who have contributed for the preservation of Kalinga culture.
He organized the Kalinga Budong Dance Troup and broadcasted Kalinga music along with the
contemporary music in the local radio station in order to share his knowledge and talent as well as to
inspire other aspiring musicians and dancers.
• Federico Caballero is an epic chanter who worked to document oral literature of the people form
Bukidnon. He used language that has long been dead to make it alive and circulate again.
• Magdalena Gamayo is a textile weaver that has preserved the traditional patterns of binakol, inuritan
(geometric design), kusikos (spiral forms), and sinabong (flowers).
• Masino Intaray is a musician and storyteller. His contribution is the conservation of basal (gong
music ensemble), baging (instrumental music that portrays nature), and kulial (lyrical poem about love
that is being sang accompanied by kusyapi).
• Uwang Ahadas is a musician who preserved music that is related to the spiritual realm. He is skillful
in playing Kwintangan kayu that is also used to serenade the palay while the man court his beloved.

National Artists

• Levi Celerio was a Filipino composer and lyricist. He wrote not less than 4,000 song and was able to
play music with the use of a leaf (“the only man who could play music using a leaf). He is also a poet
and a film actor that has contributed to the industry of Philippine films.
• Andrea Ofilada Veneracion was choral conductor. She organized the Philippine Madrigal Singers in
the year 1963. She contributed in the preservation of choral music in the Philippines.
• Ryan Caybyab is a Filipino musician, composer, and conductor whose works are related to choral
and orchestral pieces, theater musicals, even the commercial recordings of pop music and television
specials. His talent encouraged Filipino songwriters to preserve their musical identity.
• Benedicto Reyes Cabrera is a talented painter who excelled in visual arts. He is known to be the
“best-selling painter of his generation of Filipino artists,” who inspired a lot of aspiring artist in his
times.
• Virgilio Senadrin Almario is an artist, translator, author, editor, poet, critic and a cultural manager
who is currently the chairman of Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF). This organization is committed
to promote and standardize the use of Filipino language.

5. Why do you think there is a need to have two national awards for the arts? Should there
be a clear-cut line between GAMABA awardees and National Artists? What issues surround
the National Artist Award and GAMABA? Prove your answer.

Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan (GAMABA) and National Artists awards are of distinct criteria.
GAMABA awards are focused on the arts that preserves the national cultural heritage of the Filipinos.
GAMABA awardees artworks provides and promotes indigenous and traditional arts that are passed on to
the next generations. On the other hand, the National Artists award is the highest state honor given to an
artist whose work of arts resembles the classical western arts.
