3M™ Novec™ 1230 Fire Protection Fluid’s Class A Extinguishing

Concentration Reduced to 3.3%

December 16, 2014

Testing indicates a potential 4.25% reduction in the Novec 1230 fluid extinguishing concentration
needed to achieve optimal performance

Based on recent Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) and FM Approvals “witnessed” testing, the
minimum Class A extinguishing concentration for 3M™ Novec™ 1230 Fire Protection Fluid was reduced
from 3.5% to 3.3% for all systems that meet the minimum average nozzle pressure of 74.4 psi. Because
the design concentration for Class A hazards is directly impacted by the heptane cup burner values,
the test result will not impact the design concentration for Class A hazards.

The testing, however, will reduce the minimum design concentration for National Fire Protection
Association (NFPA) 2001 Class C energized hazards from 4.7% to 4.5%,* resulting in a potential 4.25%
reduction in the amount of agent required for Class C hazards.

The reduction in Novec 1230 fluid extinguishing concentration is the direct result of 3M’s efforts to
validate the fluid’s efficiency and performance – just one more reason to choose the sustainable,
smart solution: 3M™ Novec™ 1230 Fire Protection Fluid.

Smart, safe, sustainable fire suppression

Unlike the potent greenhouse gases HFC-227ea (Chemours’ FM-200™) or HFC-125 (Chemours’ FE-
25™), Novec 1230 fluid is not targeted for phase-down under the European F-gas regulation and is not
subject to the global HFC phase-down under the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol. Also,
under the Significant New Alternatives Policy (SNAP) Program, the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) has proposed a status change for HFCs sold into various industry sectors.

• 3.3% x 1.35 = 4.5% - Class C minimum design concentration is 1.35 times the Class A minimum
extinguishing concentration (UL 2166, UL 2127).
