Digestion in Grass Eating Animals

Introduction:
Nutrition: The process of taking and utilizing food for
growth and maintenance is known as nutrition.

Nutrition in Animals:
Animals depend on other plants and animals for food.
This type of nutrition is called Heterotrophic nutrition.
Our body cannot utilize food as drunk as it is, so it
should be converted in to simple substances. The food
we eat undergoes few important steps:

Ingestion: Is process of taking food into the body.

Digestion: Is the breaking down of food into simple

substances which can be absorbed by the body.
Absorption: Is the transport of digested food particles
that is nutrients and water in the tissues of the body.

Assimilation: Is the movement of the absorbed nutrients

from the digestive system into different regions of the
body for energy growth and maintenance of health.

Egestion: Is the process by which any undigested based

food is eliminated from the body.
All animals do not take in a digest food the same way.
Complex organisms have special organs in their body to
ingest, digest and absorb and assimilate food. Birds
have beaks to peck food.

A giraffe can pull some leaves and small twigs from a

tall tree into its mouth using lips and tongue.
Frog uses its sticky tongue to catch insects.
A mosquito uses feeding tube to suck blood.
Hydra is small organism uses tentacles to ingest food.

Paramecium a tiny single celled freshwater organism

which takes in food using cilia which is a hair like
structure present on its body surface.
Amoeba is a simple organism which performs all the
steps of the nutrition process in one single cell.

Amoeba has a a cell membrane around thick nucleus in

many small bubble-like vacuoles.
It has pseudopodia of false feet to move and ingest
food.

It extends the false feet wrap them around the food

particles and capture them inside the bubbles like cavity
of food vacuole.

The vacuole secretes digestive juices to break down the

food.

The soluble food substances are then absorbed and

assimilated to provide energy and to perform other
bodily functions.

The undigested food is eliminated as waste.
