Assignment Brief
Student Name/ID Number
Submission Format
The submission is in the form of an individual written report and a set of design and details’
drawings.
The simple bridge column shown in Fig. (1) is to be designed for a region of heigh seismicity as
shown in the spectral shapes of the 5% damping displacement and acceleration response spectra,
see Figs. (2) and (3). On the bases of preliminary design, a circular column of 1.80 m diameter has
been selected, and the reinforcement yield strength is 420 MPa. Assume a normal ground motion
effects, i.e., far-fault effects. The design limit-state is represented by a drift d = 0.04. The effective
column height is 9.0 m to the center of the superstructure mass, and the tributary weight
contributing to the seismic inertia of the column is 5000 kN. For simplicity, ignore strain penetration
into the foundation.
Design the pier according to DDBD and FBD methods by computing the required design strength
from both methods. Determine the needed longitudinal and transverse reinforcement according to
chapter 4 in the textbook for DDBD and according to AASHTO/ACI code requirements for FBD. For
both designs develop the force-displacement curves using CUMBIA software and compare the
results.
3
Consider the following information for the pier design:
Height H = 9m; Column dimensions D = 1.80m; cover to long. Bar = 50mm
Long. Rebar: dbl = 40mm; fy = 420 MPa; fu = 630 MPa
Trans. Rebar: dbt = 20mm; fy = 420 MPa; fu = 630 MPa; su = 0.12
Concrete: f’c = 40 MPa
Axial Load: Nu = 5.00 MN
Hint: Use strength/force reduction factor for the single pier as proposed by the AASHTO code.
Use the material overstrength factors proposed in the textbook (Ch. 4) for DDBD.

Plagiarism is a particular form of cheating. Plagiarism must be avoided at all costs and students who break the
rules, however innocently, may be penalised. It is your responsibility to ensure that you understand correct
referencing practices. As a university level student, you are expected to use appropriate references throughout
and keep carefully detailed notes of all your sources of materials for material you have used in your work, including
any material downloaded from the Internet. Please consult the relevant unit lecturer or your course tutor if you
need any further advice.
