characteristics tests. When discharged quantities
are being assessed using fluids other than steam,
the valve disc shall be held mechanically at the
same lift as that obtained with steam at the same
overpressure.

20.1.2 Safety valves for water below 100 O C . After

operational characteristics hake been satisfactorily
established using water as the test fluid it is
acceptable to use water or other liquid of similar
viscosity for flow characteristics tests.

20.1.3 General. It is NOT permissible to use

steam, air or other gas for the flow characteristics
testing of a water safety valve below 100 "C, nor
water or any other liquid for the flow
characteristics testing of a safety valve for steam
or water a t or above 100 O C . '

Clause 21.5.1 General

In paragraph 2, line 2, delete '(18)' and substitute '(19)'.

Clause 21.5.5 Hot water

Delete the existing text entirely and substitute the following.
'21.5.5 Hot water at or above 100 O C . The rating of
a safety valve mounted on a fully flooded hot
water boiler not covered by BS 779 or BS 855 shall
be calculated using the following equation:
R = O.329PAKdr

where
R is the rating of a safety valve (in kW)*;
P is the actual relieving pressure (in bar
absolute);
A is the flow area (mm2);
Kdr is the derated coefficient of discharge
determined in accordance with 21.1
(see equation 6).

NOTE. I t IS recommended that the set pressure of the safety

valvds) is not less than the 10 TOabove the boiler operation
pressure with a minimum of 1.3 bar to prevent unnecessary
lifting of the safety valve(s).'

Clause 21.5.6 Water below 100 "C

Alter 21.5.5, insert the following new clause.

'21.5.6 Water below 100 "C. The certified discharge

capacity of a safety valve discharging water below
100 "C shall be calculated using the following
equation:

where
Q,, is the certified discharge capacity of water
below 100 "C (in kg/h);
A is the flow area (in mm2);
11 is the volumetric mass (in kg/m3);
AI' is the pressure drop (in bar), i.e. P - P,;
P is the actual flowing (inlet) pressure
((set pressure x 1.1)+ 1)(in bar absolute);
Pl, is the back pressure (in bar absolute);
Kdr is the derated coefficient of discharge
determined in accordance with 21.1
(see equation 6).
