D & F Block Elements
UNIT 8
Half and completely filled sets of orbitals are relatively more stable.
Physical Properties
Metallic properties such as high tensile strength, ductility, malleability, high
thermal and electrical conductivity and metallic lustre.
The transition metals (with the exception of Zn, Cd and Hg) are very hard
and have low volatility.
The high melting points of these metals are attributed to the involvement
of greater number of electrons from (n-1)d in addition to the
ns electrons in the interatomic metallic bonding.
During first ionisation, electron is lost from 4s orbital because it have higher energy
and forms uni-positive ion and the remaining one electron is transferred back
into 3d lower energy orbital as energy gap between 3d and 4s lowers. This
transition of electrons into lower orbital gives a net decrease in ionisation enthalpy
(where energy is released as reorganization energy).
There is, thus a reorganization energy accompanying ionisation with some gains
in exchange energy as number of electrons increases and from transference of s
electrons into d orbitals. However the value of Cr is lower because of the absence
of any change in d configuration.

The first ionisation enthalpy, in general, increases, but the
magnitude of the increase in the second and third ionisation
enthalpies for the successive elements, is much higher along
a series.
(b) Mn 2+: In the same way, Fe2+ has d 6 configuration and Mn2+ has
3d5 configuration. Hence, ionisation enthalpy of Fe2+ is lower than the Mn2+.
In other words, we can say that the third ionisation enthalpy of Fe is lower
than that of Mn.

Oxidation States
Oxidation States of the first row Transition Metals
• Such alloys are formed by atoms with metallic radii that are within
about 15 percent of each other. Because of similar radii and other
characteristics of transition metals, alloys are readily formed by these
metals.
