Here it can also mean that the wind in which he breathed harmed her.

It is obvious that the speaker of the poem is late Annabel Lee’s lover. This poem is written in first
person’s point of view where the speaker narrates the story about his lover. There are various themes
in the poem which includes pure love, darkness and loneliness . When he talks about their affiliation
and affection it symbolizes love. When he talks about his death it symbolizes the loneliness and darkness
surrounding him after Annabel lee’s death.

According to the speaker, Annabel lee had no any other thought except him. Here the role of language is
quite significant as the choice of words makes me feel like he loved Annabel lee all by his heart. He is
regretting on his own death and now trying to express his sorrow on her death by making up a story that
angels envied her and him. Here he is blaming the wind and angels for the death of Annabel lee. In every
stanza he is trying to compel the reader to believe that both of them were in love and angels conspired
against them. He believes that his soul is inseparable from Annabel Lee's. Every night he dreams of her
and sleeps next to her in her tomb. The sequence of stanzas makes the reader able to comprehend the
story narrated by the speaker.

The conflict in the poem is how angels conspired against his and Annabel lee’s love

The tone of the poem keeps shifting as in the starting stanzas he is passionate about their love suddenly
the tone becomes depressive and dark when he talks about Annabel Lee’s love. The starting line gives
the basic idea of setting of the poem which is kingdom near the ocean and near the grave yard of
Annabel lee. Poe has used several literary devices to enhance the beauty of the poem. The author
personified “wind” which refers the idea that wind is acting like a human being and can kill another
person. There is an excessive use of Alliteration in the poem.

The poem is a ballad and a lyrical poem which was created for reciting and singing purpose. This poem
consists of six stanzas with irregular length and structure. The poem contains enjambment which
successfully helps to build a story with suspense of what will happen next. The rhyme scheme followed
by the entire poem is ABABCB. There is an internal rhyme too which is, “For the moon never beams,
without bringing me dreams”. Two words “beams” and “dreams” rhyme with each other. The phrases,
“Of the beautiful Annabel Lee” and “In a kingdom by the sea,” keep repeating with the identical words
so here they are Refrain and repetition. The poet uses imagery exceptionally like we can imagine the
whole scenery of the poem. The poet used kinaesthetic and visual imagery. When he talks about the
wind blowing, here the reader feels a sense of motion. On the other hand he uses visual imagery too,
when he talks about the setting “in a kingdom by the sea” and in her tomb by the sounding sea” then
readers imagine a chilly and desolate place.

There are several themes discussed in the poem like love, envy and mortality.

The meter
Edgar Allan Poe’s “Annabel Lee” is written in the romantic era and is the perfect example of a
combination of several romantic terms within a handful of stanzas. He uses nostalgia, romantic love,
desire and loss, tragedy, Gothicism, the sublime, transcendence, and the grotesque all within forty-one
lines.

The fact that the angels were jealous of the narrator’s relationship is ironic because angels are supposed
to be pure creatures.

the line is composed of beats that contain a stressed syllable followed by an unstressed syllable. The
really neat thing is that this type of line has a name too: “trochaic tetrameter.” It’s just like iambic
pentameter, except there are four trochees (DAdum) instead of four iambs.
