CHAPTER 1

Background of the Study

As the positivity rate of Covid-19 in the Philippines started to decrease, the Department of
Education (DepEd) together with the Department of Health (DOH), have supported and
implemented the re-opening of face to face classes for S.Y 2022 – 2023. But as the students
started to venture once again to the old type of learning modality, many old behaviors and habits
acquired during the online classes might influence the psychological and behavioral habits of
students that may serve as a hindrance to their overall performance in school.

A study by Wan Ling in 2021 stated that during the online classes, many college students
especially those on the higher levels were easily being stressed or depressed due to the
lockdown around their area. It is also stated that most students are in need of psychological
consultation as the learning modality that they are going into negatively affects their
performance in school.

Psychological habits are behaviors that are repeated and might influence an individual
positively or negatively depending on the factors that revolves around them. Changes in
psychological and behavioral may serve as an indication that the type of learning modality
greatly affects the changes in terms of a student’s habits and this changes in habits may have
an impact to their overall performance in school.

Currently, the Department of Health together with the Department of Education are on the
looks for the possible effects of the sudden changes in the learning modality to the behaviors of
the students especially for those students that are too young and not prepared enough to go
back once again to the face to face classes after almost two years of attending online classes
inside their houses.

Statement of the Problem

Generally, this study wanted to identify the Psychological and Behavioral habits of
students that were developed and changed before and after the re-opening of face to face
classes.

Specifically, this study aimed to answer the following questions:

1. Is there a significant difference in the psychological and behavioral habits of students

during the blended learning and face to face learning approach?
2. What are the influences of blended learning to the psychological behavior of the
students?
3. What are some noticeable changes in the psychological behavior of the students during
the implementation of face to face classes?

Objectives of the Study

This study aims to compare the psychological and behavioral habits of Grade 12
students of SHSWBES before and after the implementation of face-to-face classes.

Specifically, this study aims to:

a. determine the effects of blended learning modality on the student’s psychological

behavior;
b. assess whether or not these habits affect the student’s academic performance in face to
face classes;
c. identify the changes in the psychological behavior of students after the re-opening of face
to face classes; and
d. know which type of learning modality results in more students developing unhealthy
habits.

Hypotheses

The following statements were tested to either accept or reject the assumptions regarding
the difference between the psychological and behavioral habits of students before and after the
implementation of face to face classes.

1. There is no significant difference in the psychological and behavioral habits of students

before and after the implementation of face to face classes.

2. Blended learning has no influence to the psychological behavior of the students.

3. There is no noticeable changes observed in the psychological behavior of the students

during the implementation of face to face classes.

Significance of the Study

This study aims to determine the effects of online learning modality and reimplementation
of face to face classes. The results and findings of this study would be beneficial to the
following:

Students. This study will help students by providing information about their psychological
and behavioral habits that they acquired during online classes and re-opening of face to face
classes.

Teachers. This study will benefit teachers by raising their awareness regarding the
effects of both learning modality to the psychological and behavioral habits of their students.

Department of Education (DepEd). This study will raise awareness and provide

information regarding the effects of both learning modality to the mental health of the students
and that may guide the DepEd in giving handouts of schedules for the students.

Future Researchers. This study will serve as a guideline to the other researchers who
will conduct the same topic or idea in the future.

Scope and Delimitations

This study will only focus on the grade 12 students of Senior High School Within Bacoor
Elementary School. This study will be using a close-ended survey questionnaire. This study will
be asking question related to the psychological and behavioral habits of students before and
after the implementation of face to face classes. The respondents for this study will be acquired
through random sampling until the target of 150 respondents were reached. The time period for
data gathering will be done within one month from November 1, 2022 to December 5, 2022.

Research Framework
Theoretical Framework

Conceptual Framework

This study aims to determine the change in the psychological and behavioral habits of
Students. The independent variable will be the type of learning modality which is the blended
learning and face to face learning and the dependent variable will be the change in the
psychological and behavioral habits of the students. Also, depending on the type of learning
modality, different psychological behaviors are being developed

Independent Variable Dependent Variable

Change in the
Type of Learning Modality Psychological and
Behavioral Habits

In the figure above, it can be observed that the type of learning modality is the
independent variable and change in the psychological and behavioral habits as the dependent
variable. It is also shown that there is a one directional relationship presented in the figure since
the change in the psychological and behavioral habits are possible influenced by the type of
learning modality that the students is currently engaging to. Also, depending on the type of
learning modality, different psychological behaviors are being developed into the students that
may influence their school performance.
