1. General Introduction
Solid Insulated RMU (hereinafter referred to as ring main unit) is a fully enclosed
power supply unit, using vacuum circuit breaker as the main switch component of
load switch and circuit breaker. It adopts the solid insulation embedded pole
technology. The vacuum circuit breaker and its connected electric conductor are
fully enclosed within the epoxy resin shell. The mechanism and 90% of
transmission components are all sealed within the mechanism box, which reaches
the best anti-corrosion effect, eliminates the possibility of faults occurred by
corrosion. It completely gets rid of SF6 gas and its degree of protection reaches
IP67, which ensures the reliability of operation and safety of staff and realizes the
maintenance-free as well.
The ring main unit is rated for use in the three-phase alternating current power
distribution system with 24kV, 50Hz. It is used for ring network power supply or
terminal power supply. It can be loaded into a compacted secondary substation
used for controlling and protecting the distribution transformer.

3.2 Install the Busbar

3.2.1 The Preparation Work
 After completing the process of the cabinet combination, it could start the
installation of busbar. This chapter only describes the installation of busbar
on the standard cabinet; for other special cabinets, the installation method
will not be narrated here.

 Remove the upper back plate

off the cabinet; you can see
the three-phase bushing for
installing the busbar, shown
as the picture above.
 Find the double-screw bolt in the package of busbar
installation accessories (one end is the M12 screw thread,
and the other end is the M16 screw thread), shown as the
right picture;

19
 Screw the double-screw bolt into the three-phase bushing screw hole, the
tool is flat screwdriver, the situation after screwed is shown as the below
picture.

 Brushing a thin layer of silicone grease on the surface of the three-phase

bushing.
Note: clean the taper surface with absolute ethyl alcohol before applying.
The purpose of this procedure is to reduce the friction when install the
busbar bushing shoe.
The recommended silicon grease is the Eagle Silicone BESSIL 25 from

to reduce the friction when insert busbar into the bushing shoe;
 As the order shown in the table below, insert the busbar into the bushing shoe
in turn. The sequence, shown in the table from left to right, corresponds to
the sequence of three phase bushing (facing to the back of cabinet);
 The cautions of pre-assemble: the busbar should be inserted in place, the
mounting holes of both ends of busbar should be aimed at the center of
bushing shoes; the direction of the conductors of both sides of busbar should
be in accordance with the diagram shown below;
 The following three charts below show the pre-assembly sequence of the
three-phase busbar, if there are more than 3 units, please follow this pattern
as well.

3.2.4 Busbar Installation

 The picture and procedure of busbar installation take 3 units of cabinets as the example, the
installation of other cabinets are as same as the following picture;
Phase A

Phase B

Phase C

 The picture on the right shows the situation after 3 cabinets

combined together.

 The picture below shows the procedure of 3 way busbar installation, install phase C busbar
first, and then install phase B busbar, install phase A busbar at the last.
Solid Insulated RMU Installation & Operating Instructions

 The weight of the pre-assembled busbars is very heavy. The more cabinets, the heavier the
weight is, and the larger the dimension is. Therefore, the number of assembly operators is
required according to the actual situation, we suggest at least two operators. When there are
more than 4 cabinets, then there should be three or 4 assembly operators.

 The installation procedures of busbar are as follows:

Step 1: Put the whole busbar vertically downward from the top of the cabinet.
Step 2: Aim the bushing shoe to the corresponded bushing, insert the bushing shoe to
the bushing; Try to insert all the bushing shoe at the same time, so to make sure it’s
vertical , and reduce the curve stress. Adjust the busbar appropriately, in order to make
the double-end bolt penetrates through the conductor installation hole, pushing the
bushing shoe hard, until busbar conductor contacted with the bushing conductive
surface. Use flat washer, elastic washer and nut to tighten the busbar, the tightening tool
is torque spanner, and the tightening torque is 40Nm.
Step 3: Brush the conical surface of the back plugging with a little silicone grease
(Spain Eagle’s silicone BESSIL25), and put it into the hole at the end of the bushing
shoe, tighten it on the double-end bolt, the tightening torque is torque spanner, and
tightening torque is 40Nm.
 After completed the above three steps, clean the silicone grease attached on the surface of
the bushing shoe and busbar with a clean cotton cloth.
 Assemble the upper back plate of the cabinets. The procedure of busbar installation has
been completed.

 If users use the cable connector produced by other
Taper Bushing
manufacturers, then users should confirm the type
of bushing first, so to ensure the cable connector
match with the outgoing bushing, and then install the cable connector according to the
installation instruction.
 For three cores cables, when making the cable
connectors, operators should make sure the three
phase cable terminals are in a horizontal line, shown
as picture on the right;
 When making the cable connectors, operators should strictly follow the production standard
of the cable connector ;
 Before installation, the surface of cable terminal and the surface of outgoing bushing
conducting rod should be wiped clean by alcohol paper;
 Use alcohol paper to wipe the contact surface of the cable connector and each insulator of
the outgoing bushing, and then evenly apply silicon grease on the surface (Spain Eagle
silicone BESSIL25);
 The fastening tool is torque spanner, the fastening torque is 40Nm. (This fastening torque
Solid Insulated RMU Installation & Operating Instructions

should be the one that fastened the terminal to the bushing)

3.4 Precaution of Cable Installation
3.4.1 The cable connector must be installed by qualified personnel according to the "Product
Installation Manual" of cable connectors.
3.4.2 When producing cable mounted plugs, regardless of site status, it must be made to ensure
that the cable and cable connectors clean and free of stains. It must be cleaned with insulating
cleaning agent(or more than 95% of alcohol) before insulation. After treated with silicon grease,
insulation coordination site could be assembled.
3.4.3 Cable peeling length is about 800mm, depending on the user according to the actual needs.
3.4.4 The size of cable conductors, insulators, semiconductors, copper shields must be made in
accordance with the instructions provided by SOJO company.
3.4.5 When removing the cable semiconductive layer, the insulating layer is not allowed to be
scratched, especially longitudinal cuts, which will lead to creepage. Once scratch or cut occurs, it
should be promptly cleaned with abrasive paper to make it flat.
3.4.6 After removing the copper shield semiconductive layer, promptly winding semiconducting
band, the winding position is between the semiconducting layer copper shield, with semi-take
method: half on the copper shield, half on the semiconductive layer, but do not wound beyond
semiconductive layer of the cable itself, it should be wrapped around a certain slope to uniform
end electric field distribution.
3.4.7 After making the cable done, when installing the plug, firstly the tapered column should be in
place, then the cable connectors should be crimped onto the cable conductor. Note: The three
connectors per unit mounting surface must be horizontal (when crimping connectors, burrs must be
flattened with files, to avoid hurt the cable plug).
3.4.8 As the three-core cable is bifurcated from the third way bushing, so pay attention to two
issues, one is, from the third way bushing to the root of the cable plug must have enough length, to
maintain a reasonable cable bending radius. Otherwise it will cause the plug forcibly bending
deformation, breaking the sealing, and result creepage, lead to destruction of the equipment; the
other is, the length of the three cable out of the three way bushing should be different: the length of
phase A is same to phase C, phase B (middle position) is shorter (the length of shorter part
depends on bending radius of phase A and phase C), so as to guarantee a consistent horizontal level
Solid Insulated RMU Installation & Operating Instructions

of three-phase cables, and all outstretched;a better way to make it is firstly putting the connectors
into the combining seats and then saw off them according to the length of the cables, taking the
middle phase first, and then make the other two phases, the length is easier to handle in this way
(Note: the cable must be fastened first).
3.4.9 The cable accessories plug must be aligned to the fastening screws, after two buckles
fastened in a right way, other buckles should be fastened, back plug must be tighten (to ensure the
seal does not leak ) but not beyond the force, otherwise it will cause wrong buckle and loose,
affecting the electrical performance, lead to unnecessary accidents.
3.4.10 All parts must be in their places, screwing parts must be in place enough force. For example,
conductive rod and terminals and high-voltage cabinet seat must be affixed tightly, before
installing the surge arresters, the incoming cable must be installed as required, and then installing
the arrester. After installed arresters plugs should be cover tightly, then clip it up, and effectively
earthed(with cabinet earthing wires connected is also allowed) .
3.4.11 It is NOT allowed to take frequency voltage withstand test and frequency discharge voltage
test with surge arrester in the equipment.
3.4.12 Cable accessory device is NOT allowed to bear the weight of the cable itself, the weight is
borne by the cable bracket.

logic operation below:
 When the main switch is in the closing position, the disconnector/earthing switch cannot be
operated;
 When the main switch is in the opening position, the disconnector/earthing switch is in the
closing position, then the cable compartment door cannot be opened;
 When disconnector /earthing switch is in the earthing position, and the main switch is in the
closing position, then the cable compartment door can be opened;
 When the cable compartment door is opened, then both the main switch and the disconnector
/earthing switch cannot be operated;

 The logic diagram as below:

For load switch and fuse combination module (module F), because high-voltage current-limiting fuse
is added, so in the interlocking logic relations, the interlocking point of fuse cap is added between the
disconnector /earthing switch and the cable compartment door, the logic diagram is as follows:

 The “closing operation” here means through mechanical or electrical operation, to close
the main switch of this switchgear (circuit breaker or load switch), so as to realize
electrical connections between switchgear and main busbar.
 Step 1: Make sure the cable compartment door has already been installed in place;
 Step 2: Manually turn clockwise opening knob of circuit breaker to the opening
position;
 Step 3: Insert the operation handle into the operation hole of disconnector/earthing
switch, turn anti clockwise to the closing position, make the disconnector in the closing
position;
 Step 4: Insert the operation handle into the circuit breaker operation hole, turn it
anti-clockwise around 4 circles, to make the circuit breaker operation mechanism
charging indicator point at the “charged” position;
 Step 5: Manually turn clockwise closing knob of circuit breaker to the closing position,
the circuit breaker closes.
 Opening operation
 Step 1: Manually turn clockwise opening knob of circuit breaker to the opening
position.
 Step 2: Insert the operation handle into the operation hole of disconnector/earthing
switch, turn clockwise to the opening position of disconnector and reach the
pre-earthing position;
 Step 3: Insert the operation handle into the circuit breaker operation hole, turn it
anti-clockwise around 4 circles, to make the circuit breaker operation mechanism
charging indicator point at the “charged” position;
 Step4: Manually clockwise turn the circuit breaker closing knob, then the outgoing
circuit is earthed; at this time the switchgear is already isolated from the main busbar,
quits the operation, and the cable side of the cabinet has been reliably earthed;
 Step 5: if necessary, the cable compartment door can be removed to inspect the cable
and to do other maintenance work;

4.4 Install and remove the high voltage current-limiting fuse.

 This chapter is a part of operation of load switch and fuse combination module (Module F);
 When there is a short circuit failure between the outgoing cable side and the transformer
high-voltage side of module F or the transformer is overloaded, the high-voltage
current-limiting fuse for protection use will be blown. After blown, the fuse striker will
pop-up, which will push the striker pin popping up so as to pushing the tripping device to
open the load switch eventually. The process is as follows:

 After the fuse blown, through the “fuse blown indication” observation hole on the left
corner of the module F panel, you can see that the indication sign of fuse status has already
turned red. This means that the fuse has been blown. In the mean time, through the load
switch status observation hole you can find that the load switch has been already opened.
 After observing the fuse been blown, either all the three phases of the fuses have been
blown or just one or two phases of fuses have been blown, all the three phases of fuses
should be replaced together;

after which the fuse can be separated from striker pin mechanism;
 Replace the old fuse with the new fuse, and put the new fuse into the striker pin
mechanism; use the straight screwdriver fasten the screw of the hose clamp.

! Caution: the current specifications of the new fuse should be the same with the one of the old

fuse; the fuse striker should face towards the striker pin mechanism.
 Through pressing the “tripping panel of striker pin 撞 针 机 构 脱 撞
