ABOUT US
Team Orion is a group of six students of Mechanical,
Electrical, and Electronics from NED University of Engineering
and Technology, currently devoted to fabricating an RC plane
in order to research, analyze and test the inner workings of a
radio controlled aircraft. Team Orion was put together in
order to take participation in this competition and our
members are versatile in the design, formulation, and
electronics of RC aircraft.The annual event of IMechE, named
‘PropellAir’ held in summer is where the undergraduate
students showcase their talent, confidence and hard work.
Whilst taking part in the project we will learn how to work as
part of a team, how to use our time efficiently and how to
meet deadlines. It is our unique opportunity for industry and
academia to develop strong, long-term links.

SCOPE OF PROJECT
A radio-controlled aircraft (often called RC aircraft or RC
plane) is a model aircraft that is controlled remotely,
typically with a hand-held transmitter and a receiver within
the craft. The transmitter continuously communicates with a
receiver within the craft that sends signals to
servomechanisms (servos) which move the control surfaces
based on the position of joysticks on the transmitter. The
control surfaces, in turn, directly affect the orientation of
the plane.

THE EVENT PROPELLAIR 22’

PropellAir, is a three to four days program held by the
IMechE NEDUET branch. The goal of arranging this event is
to provide a platform for students who are interested in
aerodynamics and have the necessary knowledge and
technical abilities to create an RC plane. Theoretically, the
participants' knowledge is also evaluated. During the
formation of their initiatives, students are completely
coached by skilled members of the IMechE NED. Our
technical members are always willing to offer helpful advice
to the students who are participating.

ADVANTAGES OF THIS EVENT

It encourages students to adopt innovative techniques and
develop their ideas and skills. This competition forces students to
compete against each other and benefits them in learning the
fundamentals of flight, as well as electronics and mechanics, and
how the various components of an aircraft work together to fly.
Theories earned in books are practically applied here like we’re
able to see Bernoulli's principle of lift in a scaled-down version.
Competitions like these are interrelated and also help students in
understanding the real-world concepts and difficulties of
aviation and aeronautical engineering.

OBJECTIVES & TIMELINE

Our Team Leader, Hassan Ali, has taken up the role to design and
formulate the model of the RC plane. After intensive research and
proper guidance he was able to lay our hands on the CAD design
and the remaining members are focused on fabricating, completing
the research, and gathering the knowledge for this vital project.

CHALLANGES
A systematic system engineering technique to identify the
requirement, selecting a concept with a design to fulfill those
criteria, and testing to ensure that the real systems meet the
requirements in practice.
Approaches to solving technical problems.
A cost-effective design solution that is backed up by thorough
research and modeling.
Paying close attention to features such as control linkage
connections, locknut use, wiring and connection security,
airframe robustness, and undercarriage.
Operation of Radio Fail safe check system.

In Mission-2, we are required to drop an external payload in the

desired area. Total mission time will be 4.5 minutes after which a
penalty would be applied.
