Character of Della

Della Dillingham young is the young and beautiful wife of Mr. James Dillingham. Despite
her poverty, she is happy with her husband. The poor financial situation of the family hardly
stands in the way of their love and passion for each other. The family lives in a small
apartment that has one valuable thing to show for it. However, there are few things in the
apartment that manifest their poverty, and they would like to change them if they could.

Her selfless love

Most of the story is told from Della's point of view. She needs Jim to comfort her when she is
sad because she is young, loving, and kind, but she is also an emotional girl. She has only
saved $1.87 over the past year, but she really wants to give Jim a special Christmas gift this
year, which is the main problem shown in the story. At the beginning of the story, her long,
beautiful hair is her most prized possession. However, she decides to sell it in an act of
selflessness so that she can buy Jim a good watch chain because she cares so much about
him.

Della Dillingham never expects anything from her husband but his love. On the other hand,
James reciprocates her feelings, and she has no reason to complain.

Ideal beauty

Mrs. Della Dillingham is a young and extremely beautiful woman. She is not only beautiful
externally but also possesses a beautiful soul. She has long, soft, lustrous hair that any woman
can be jealous of, despite all the jewellery she walks past. She has been saving up all year to
buy a nice present for Jim, but when she sits down to count the money, she realises there isn't
enough for a decent gift. All her efforts to save happiness were unsuccessful. Her eyes were
filled with tears streaming down her cheeks, and suddenly an idea came to her mind, an idea
befitting a beautiful young lady like her that is not very easy to handle at this time. She sold
her hair to get a gift for her husband.

She initially realises what she's done, but the fact that she can grow her hair out and has no
opinion demonstrates her greatness and importance.

She appears to be the epitome of love, care, and sacrifice. Della is the most important
character of the short story, and she stays in the scene from the beginning to the end.
