Kumudini Welfare Trust of Bengal (BD) Ltd is a philanthropic organization founded by Rai Bahadur Ranada
Prasad Shaha popularly known as R P Shaha. The founder was born poor, became very wealthy through his
business ventures only to give away all his wealth voluntarily. Since inception the Trust is working mainly in
the field of health care, education and empowerment of the underprivileged women.
In 1938, R P Shaha set up a dispensary with outdoor facilities at his village home. In 1944 the then Governor
of Bengal, Lord Richard G Casey inaugurated the 750-bed Kumudini Hospital named after R P Shaha's
beloved mother “Kumudini” who died at childbirth in his native village Mirzapur. Subsequently, Kumudini
Welfare Trust was formally established in June 1947.
In a written address to the guests at the inauguration of Kumudini Hospital, Lord Casey summed up the spirit
of the endeavor: “I have come here today because I feel that this hospital affords a high example of what can
be done when the initiative, enterprise and public spirit of one man are directed towards the welfare and
the well being of the community”. The hospital started its journey as one of the most modern hospitals in
East Bengal during the British period, continued through the turmoil of Pakistan time and is still serving the
poor of Bangladesh.
British India was divided on the basis of religion and Pakistan was created for the Muslims. R P Shaha did not
believe in the difference of caste, creed or religion. He gave priority to the welfare of mankind above
everything else. Kumudini still follows his principle. The business headquarters of Kumudini was at 22 Strand
Road, Calcutta, India. But after partition of India, when most of the wealthy and even many poor non-
Muslims of the then East Pakistan left for India, R P Shaha shifted to East Pakistan to serve his land of birth.
R P Shaha strongly believed that the foremost requirement to achieve women's freedom and establish their
rights were healthcare and education. He established an impressive institution Bharateswari Homes; a free
residential school for girls at Mirzapur in 1944. He also founded Kumudini Girls' College at Tangail and
Debendra College at Manikganj in Bangladesh and Kumudini Homes at Kalimpong in West Bengal, India.
During the Second World War R P Shaha donated an amount of Rs.2,50,000/- to the Red Cross Appeal Fund.
During the Bangladesh liberation war in 1971 R P Shaha along with his younger son were abducted by the
Pakistan Army and their collaborators. They never returned.
Since establishment the Trust is a self-financing organization. Income generated through the business
ventures like Jute Baling & Warehouse, Garments Manufacturing, Pharmaceuticals, River Transportation
etc are all spent for the welfare of the poor and the distressed.
In addition to the free hospital and the residential girls' school the Trust is now running a Medical College for
Women, a Nursing School, a Nursing College and a Technical Training Institute. Recent inclusion in the line of
educational institutions is the Ranada Prasad Shaha University (RPSU) which has started functioning since
April 2014. The university is located at Shitalakhya, Narayanganj.
Handicraft Industry of the Trust has generated job opportunity for over 26,000 poor women from all over
Bangladesh. This was started back in 1972 immediately after the independence of the country to support
the women widowed or left destitute.
The Trust is in the process of building up an Inland River Container Port on its premises at Naryanganj. This
venture is expected to generate a reasonable amount of revenue to help run the welfare activities
comfortably. In addition it is also planned to set up an “Old Home” at Mirzapur for the poor and needy.
Mr. Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan on a visit to Kumudini Complex at
Mirzapur in the mid-fifties wrote in the visitor's book:
“A poor man became a millionaire, and the millionaire voluntarily became a poor man, spending his all in the
service of humanity, for the suffering and the distressed, for the furtherance of education, for rendering a
service to the State, which the state itself has not undertaken. But is the Rai Bahadur poor; he is rich in the
esteem, in the affection, in the love of a grateful people; having given all his worldly possessions, he has
obtained more than those who were his compeers. May that state and the people he has served so well give
him that recognition which is his due, and not destroy the great institution he has built with such love and
devotion.”
In spite of all the hurdles that the Trust has come across it is continuing to expand the welfare activities which
were the dream of the founder.

MESSAGE
I am very happy to learn that Kumudini Women's Medical College (KWMC) is celebrating with visual pride its
first Reunion, an important event in the life of an institution dedicated to the cause of suffering humanity.
The Medical College being set up in 2000 is only 17 years old now, and has in its short span of existence
become one of the top private medical colleges of the country. Ever since its inception, KWMC is in the
vanguard of upholding the high standards of professional dignity and decorum, which goes with any
profession, more so the medical profession.
The 750 bed Kumudini Hospital which started its journey back in 1944 has always been providing the
students of KWMC with the unique opportunity of gathering practical knowledge through availability of
huge number of patients. Along with the hospital, the founder of Kumudini Welfare Trust Rai Bahadur
Ranada Prasad Shaha dreamt of setting up a medical college but unfortunately this did not materialize as he
became a martyr during our war of liberation.
Our goal in KWMC is to improve the health and well being of our countrymen and people everywhere. This
requires that we strive to be national and international leaders in health care, education, research and
outreach, and that we balance those efforts so that each contributes to its fullest potential toward our goal.
Our graduates have earned name and fame at home and abroad through their sincerity and devotion. I am
confident that the future doctors graduating from KWMC shall materialize the dream of Rai Bahadur Ranada
Prasad Shaha and that being “none should die of lack of medical care and attention”.
I take this opportunity to wish KWMC, the alumni and the students all glory, prosperity and a very bright
future in the years ahead.
MESSAGE
It gives me immense pleasure to welcome all the graduate students of Kumudini Women's Medical College in
joining us for this grand 'Reunion festive 2017' and thus publishing a souvenir on its journey through growth
and achievements during last 16 years and remembering the most valuable antiques, your respected teachers,
little mates and moreover those wonderful surroundings of Kumudini.
I am profoundly humbled in expressing honor and gratitude to our founder Rai Bahadur RP Shaha for his
dedicated input in education, health and development for poor and marginalized population of the country.
Here, it is worth mentioning to acknowledge the leadership and efforts of the present Chairman of the college
for establishing this medical college for only girls in MBBS course from 2001 and BDS course from 2012 and thus
fulfilling the mission of our founder in health and development.
Kumudini Women's Medical College enjoys the essence of a disciplined environment amidst the lush green beauty
of the versatile campus. The college like a beautiful summer sun, is marching towards great heights, with its
teamwork and concerted efforts in quality education, teaching clinical skills, practicing moral values, and
manufacturing some more pious, hardworking and honest contributors to the nation. The students imbibe
qualities of an excellent teacher to set academic standards. Within its short 16 years journey, 783 girls have already
graduated as MBBS or BDS and are successfully working in country and abroad. Many of them have already
completed their postgraduate trainings and degrees in various fields. It is the distinct and collective influence of
each member in achieving this milestone and by the grace of Almighty, it gives me immense pleasure to declare
that yes we made it, we made it just not somewhere around, but completely up to the mark.
When I look ahead, I visualize that the college will have grown in pursuit of higher standards of teaching and
research, giving shape to the dream of our founder. I am sincerely enthusiastic about the future of this great
institution.
I fully embrace the opportunity to acknowledge and thank our alumni, students, teachers, dignitaries of
Kumudini family and institutions and all well-wishers for their support and efforts in making this happen.

MESSAGE
th
Kumudini Women's Medical College has now stepped in its 17 year since its inception in 2001. In the
meantime, the girl students of its eleven batches successfully passed their examinations and became
Doctors. Many of the talented Doctors of different batches are now providing health care services with good
reputation at home and abroad and thus they are promoting the goodwill and reputation of this institute as
well. Like all others of the institute, I am also highly delighted and proud.
I take this opportunity to highly appreciate all those who are actively involved in the development of this
institution.
I wish the name and glory of KUMUDINI which was established by a great philanthropist Rai Bahadur Ranada
Prasad Shaha may spread all around. I also wish grand success of this program.
FEW WORDS
A warm welcome to the gathering,
I am happy to see my students grown into the responsible citizens of the society, having achieved everything
they and us ever longed for and I am proud to say that one day I have taught them.
I feel proud to acknowledge that Mr. Rajiv Prasad Shaha, a dynamic and devoted grandson of the great
philanthropist and social legend Rai Bahadur Ranada Prasad Shaha the has established Kumudini Women's
Medical College in 2001. This added further to the crown of contributions by the great founder.
As the first principal of the college, I appreciate the dedicated endeavour and guidance of Mr. Rajiv Prasad
Shaha in initial days of development of the college with only 45 students. We had an humble start in a part of
the outdoor building of the Kumudini Hospital with limited resources. There was shortage of classroom,
laboratory, teachers and technical staffs. It was a quiet challenging task to open and run a full-fledged medical
college in such a rural area, particularly to get qualified faculties and technical staffs for running academic
courses. However, a concerted effort under his guidance we could succeed to overcoming the hurdles and run
it smoothly. I express my gratitude to all members of Kumudini Welfare Trust for all cooperation.
I am happy to see that the number of students has increased greatly, that also includes admission of a good
number of foreign students. Academic staff and facilities has improved to a standard level. Kumudini Women's
Medical College ranks amongst the most prestigious medical colleges of the country.
Here, I like to appreciate the present principal Prof. Dr. M. A. Halim for his dynamic role and hard work during
last 6 years growth of the college. It is worth mentioning that his ideas and untiring efforts under the
leadership of the Chairman, made a good number of changes in the college, which have raised the standard to
a height of excellence. Thus, we train the finest of doctors of globe and our students are doing outstanding
achievements in the field of medicine in the country and abroad. We wish to many more things for the
excellence of the medical college.
At the end, I am delighted to have you all back here today on this great occasion – Reunion 2017. This day shall
give us an opportunity to meet each other and share views through glimpse of sweet memories of the days
you passed in this beautiful campus. I hope you will enjoy the best.
My best wishes for you all.
